Re: Removing the bow in the hood

Placed two (2) 3" 2x2's under the hood in the channel at the side, one (1) near the front and the other just in front of the hinge. Took a 4x4 and placed it under the 2x2's and clamped in place with some rubber clamps. Placed a 6" 2x4 on the hood on a towel. Measured the distance I need to squeeze the hood and put a 3/4" pipe clamp on there and squeezed slowly. Over squeezed a little and waited. Removed and checked. Repeat as needed. No damage.

Re: Removing the bow in the hood

Good work on this. You have a nice looking truck and it would have been a shame to damage that hood. Do you need new hinges? Can you use the ones you have? If they're rusty can you soak them in phosphoric acid to get rid of the rust and then keep them lubed from there on out? Sandblasting may put grit into the pivot points, but it seems like phosphoric acid would just soak through and clean out any rust. My truck is a later model so I don't really have this issue, but I like the white spray lithium grease on door hinges and hood hinges. Seems to work well.

Re: Removing the bow in the hood

do not buy aftermarket stock replacement hinges. They are junk. Find someone online or ebay that sells rebuilt OEM hinges or spend the $$$$ and buy some billet hinges.

Re: Removing the bow in the hood

Here is the guy I bought a set of OEM rebuilds from in the past. You might message him and ask if he has any available.

The hinges I have are just loose. Any other thoughts on the after market hinges?

Re: Removing the bow in the hood

I got both the hinges a springs from www.rockauto.com (both hinges/springs had AC Delco part numbers and stock numbers on them) of course I bought the spring tool from LMC.
Sadly I have a kink in my stock hood (was there before I put in the new hinges) and am wondering if I can just repair that with a set of the hood stiffiners or if Id just be better off getting a new hood and have done with it.

Re: Removing the bow in the hood

Hi Guys.... Just throwing in my 2 cents...... I have had at least 15 squares in the last 30 years. In my opinion..... there is nothing wrong with the stock hood hinges on these old girls. You just have to give them a little shot of oil once in a while. Personally, I give them a few drops in all the pivots every time I change engine oil. Never had a hood "bow".

Re: Removing the bow in the hood

Me too Barry. Last week I was having trouble closing my hood on the K20. I slammed it down and it didn't latch. Hmmm, I opened it and slammed it again. Didn't latch. I was thinking, "should I grab onto this thing with both hands and reef her down or go to the shop and get some oil?" I got the oil and lubed her up and it dropped closed with one hand like it's supposed to. I guess if you are out in the woods with no oil you would have to slam it down the best way you can and probably bend it. As long as you have access to oil, it should close with one hand.

Re: Removing the bow in the hood

What is the best way to oil these hinges? WD40 is messy. a little 3 in 1?
