Car Show Season

I recently restore a 1970 K-10 back to completely original condition. Other than a very few subtle items that most people who don't know these trucks will even notice. My question is how hard is it for us guys who like to stay 100% period correct to compete with the guys that chose to go with bling and fancy wheels? I have nothing against the one that chose to go that route for there isn't one I wouldn't have in my garage. I'd just like to have some input on how to stand out since this will be the first season I have ever competed in with this truck. Thanks.

Re: Car Show Season

For some reason, the 4x4's look so much better without the bling. Your truck looks AWESOME. The white wheels and the details that I can see set it off way more than any chrome or billet whatever would, in my opinion. I'd be scared to park my 2wd next to it!

I wouldn't change anything - you should be proud and do well with your build.

Re: Car Show Season

Class has no problem winning over bling, when it's done as well as yours and if the judges have class. Blingy should be in a different class anyway. I restored a SWB K/10 to factory original in the '90s and it beat out the blingies no problem. You did a great job and that's what stands out. It's not like these trucks need bling to look good.

It is a St. Louis built truck but started its life 505 dark green, but with the help of Member Chipflyer my SPID now reads Hugger Orange.

I really appreciate all the positive feedback. I enjoyed the build very much and couldn't have don't it without the help of my fellow members when it came to parts and advise.

Re: Car Show Season

Something original or made to look amazingly original will always trump something blinged up. Look at the crazy auctions. Why? Because people either want something original - or they want to start with something original before they add to it. Look where the adult crowds are at a show - especially the old geezers like me. They walk right by the crazy stuff, but stop and absorb the good stuff (like yours). Don't get me wrong, there are always crowds around a slammed well-done truck, but there will always be a crowd around an original (or one redone to look that way). Nice job, truck looks great.

Re: Car Show Season

Your truck is fantastic, I dont think you have anything to worry about. To me what makes a build is the fit and finish and quality of the work, not the style of the build being modded vs. factory.

Re: Car Show Season

I know that st louis is one of the plants that used the name hugger orange on the spids, i think that some of the other plants used the name red orange to denote the same color

Re: Car Show Season

Awesome truck. l'm restoring(or something close to restoration) a 71 GMC K1500 Short bed. I hoping to be mostly complete by late fall this year, if it looks anything like yours, I'll be very happy. Looks like you put a small suspension lift on your truck, how much lift is it? When I acquired my truck it had a 6" lift on it. When I did the frame, axles, etc, I went with a 2" lift, thinking stock height looks great but a modest lift looks even better. The cab, bed, front clip aren't back on frame yet so I don't yet know what my 2" lift looks like. Restorations and builds are in the eye of the beholder, but in my own world you can't go wrong with a stock appearance.

Re: Car Show Season

I think I have bling on my truck, and I like it! This afternoon I just loaded it up with 8 really heavy creosote soaked old railroad ties. Off I went down the road, bling, bling, bling..... Then I dragged those old ties across my bed wood and tailgate and felt quite satisfied.... with my bling.

Hey, isn't a lift with large tires, that will never see dirt, bling?

Just saying!

From the few pictures you have posted I'd say you'll have no problem standing out at a show. That's a great looking truck!

Re: Car Show Season

If the only reason you to go to shows is to get awards you won't have fun and will likely be disappointed.

Go to enjoy the truck and all the other rides and think of awards as an unexpected bonus. You'll find there's no real rhyme or reason why one vehicle wins over another (especially when a bunch of late models win) and you'll end up bitter and upset. It doesn't come up much here because the truck crowd is so laid back, but I've seen a lot of posts of upset owners of vintage Mustangs (owners with truly gorgeous factory restored cars) that will lose out to a late model or one with a bunch of stupid crap on it... Just a heads up. Again, the biggest thing is to go in expecting to leave with nothing and you'll be happier

Stunning truck!

If you're going for 100% factory your bed wood and sills should be painted body color (I'm guessing that was one of your subtle changes)

You have the best attitude possible for enjoying shows. We have been showing antique Boats for about 8 years. The awards I didn't expect to win have been the best ones. A couple times I made the mistake of having high expectations and was disappointed. A good friend of mine has stopped having his boats judged at shows and has stopped going to shows where he felt huge disappointment. I go for the socializing and to see the boats.an award is a bonus. I would like to attend a few car/truck shows in the future.
