71 c10 350 engine no power on takeoff
I hope I am doing this correctly. New to the forum and learning.
I have a 71 c10 350 with eldebrock carb. Truck is idling ok but when I put the truck in gear and try to take off there is not much power. Even if I hold the brake and try to accelerate it bogs down. When in park engine revs good. Just can't seem to find the problem. Could it be a fuel or timing issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

The 1405/6 come set up for smaller engines. You'll need the get a carb tuning kit, so you can change out springs, jets and metering rods. They're about $50 (give or take), and it's easy to do.
I say this assuming that you have no vacuum leaks. |

Sounds like the accelerator pump to me. With the engine off and cold, pull the lid off the air cleaner and actuate the throttle. You should see it shoot two streams of gas into the intake.
When the throttle is pressed, it send a lot of air all at once into the engine. The accelerator pump give a shot of fuel to go with that air.

could be timing, if timing is retarded too much it will feel like a volkswagon engine, no power. check timing first before tearing things apart...

Absolutely! Get ignition set up first then go to the carb. Otherwise you will just be chasing your problem.

Re: 71 c10 350 engine no power on takeoff
Try adjusting timing and carb before spending a dime. If the adjustments bring no improvements, then it is time to try a kit or whatever. Does it only bog when you lay on it hard? Could be too much fuel dumping in.

Re: 71 c10 350 engine no power on takeoff
Thanks for your help guys but I pulled the carb this morning and cleaned it up good and that solved the problem. The truck had been in storage for 10 years and I should have known to clean it but I guess I was a little too excited to get it going.
I do have another question though, I found out my left motor mount is broken. Reved it up with the brake on and I thought the left side of the engine raised up pretty darn high. Question is how hard would it be to replace the mount without removing the engine completely? Any ideas or suggestions?? Thanks!! |

Re: 71 c10 350 engine no power on takeoff
You shouldn't need to remove the motor, just lift it up some. If needed remove the bolt in the other mount. Be sure to clean all the threads in the new mount before installing it.
These trucks were known for breaking motor mounts. They even had a recall where the dealer put cables around the exhaust manifolds and attached them to the frame. I had them on my truck so when I went to headers on my new motor I put chains on my motor just to make sure. |

Re: 71 c10 350 engine no power on takeoff
the 1406 edelbrocks run great right out of the box on 350's and even on my 454....you figured out it was just dirty, I have rebuilt several 1406's that have sat around for awhile, the kit is about $45.00, I bought an edelbrock carb. rebuild book, they are sooo easy to rebuild...
