Hey, John. You know me, I love stepsides. That said, I think putting this truck back to its factory state would do it the most justice. Can't remember if the spid is legible or you have the model number but that should tell you whether factory step or fleet.

All that said, it's your truck; do what you want!

Well, mine was originally a fleetside, but that is how she was the day I bought it,

I sold that bed and made it a fleetside again.. Of course now I have decided to sell her off and concentrate on the other two projects I have.. Personally, I think with the low production numbers, it makes sense to put it back the way it was, or at least close to it..

There are numbers to match on trucks, just no partial VIN on block. But, the suffix code will tell more than year. The engine in my '72 K2500 is numbers matching. It isn't original to that truck, though. It is from a '72 Chevy K/20, but matches my truck. What the suffix tells is '72, K/20, 350, 4bbl, automatic transmission, and all that matches. It is the correct engine for my truck and no one can tell it isn't the one it left the factory with
You are correct as long as the truck build date was after the build date of the engine. In 1972 they were still using leftover 71 motors for a while. So as long as the application is correct there is no way of telling As far as correct motor for this truck this could still be the original 283. At any rate nice find mike it will make someone a nice project. Well worth investing money into
