Headers with Vortec heads issues
1971 C10 small block, vortec heads, th350, lowered.
I cannot seem to find a proper header that 100% works with my vortec heads. The long tube headers i have now fit fine, they dont contact the motor mounts, cab, ect. But it seems that they were made for a different head. The header flange covers up threaded holes on the head that could be used to hold the spark plug wires. But more importantly, the flange covers up the threaded coolant temp port on the passenger side head. Has anyone ran into this problem/ does anyone know of a correct header that clears everything on the head? Mid length headers are also acceptable. Thanks in advance! (I am currently running FlowTech headers)

Re: Headers with Vortec heads issues
The threaded holes are for the factory heat shields. Could be used for plug wire holders but with all the available plug wire holders available, you don't need to use them. Or run your wires in from the back and under the headers like the vettes had.
The flange that covers the temp port can be simply notched like on this set. The temp port on the drivers side head is the normal one to use. THese headers are hedmann elites btw. |

Re: Headers with Vortec heads issues
Thanks for the reply.
My headers are ceremic coated, so notching is kind of my last option. Plus I get kind of picky when stuff looks "hacked". I am going to use the drivers head for my temp sensor, and use the passenger head for a temp sending unit for an electric fan im using. Am I the only one who is running vortec heads with headers??

Re: Headers with Vortec heads issues
BTW the passenger side head isn't a good spot for your electric fan probe.
In the intake by the thermo housing is best. You can notch your header and still look good if you use a stone cone on an angle grinder. https://www.acklandsgrainger.com/en/...2/_/R-NRN22349 |

This is also why.. unless I can get to see a header on a vehicle and know the part #.. I won't buy coated headers.. I'll get them pre-fit them.. do anything needed to make them work with my vehicle and parts I maybe using.. THEN take them out and have them coated.. It is also why, if I'm going to use a sensor in the head.. I call or email the header company and ask.. As THey can either add the notch.. if not standard to that header.. or point you to the same header but with the correct flange they make with a different part # than the one you "thought" was the correct one for the app. case in point.. 68-72 chevelles with a bbc and raise port exhaust heads.. the Chevelle headers have fitment issues with the chassis, but will work.. The 2nd gen f body header for the 70-76 works a tad better and needs less clearancing.. when using raise port heads, but on a stock port head won't fit.. |

Re: Headers with Vortec heads issues
I was thinking the same thing about getting a set of uncoated headers to test fit/ make notches or trimming. Then have them coated. I am just surprised that I have not found an option of headers for my setup. More pictures of set ups will definitely be appreciated.
