Rear Axle Assembly swap - trackbar mount

62 C10 with Eaton. Swapping in an Axle assembly from a 96 Camaro this weekend.
I need to swap the track bar mount onto the new axle. Wondering how others have done that so that it ends up being in right location?

Do I install the axle, center it, and then weld the bracket on? I don't like to weld upside-down and backwards.

OR, do I need to create some kind of jig to hold it in the correct place and weld it on prior to install? Would like to do it this way, but can't picture how to create the jig

Re: Rear Axle Assembly swap - trackbar mount

Honestly I would use an aftermarket "long" track bar (like from Early Classic, super bar) which goes from the frame mount to the pass side trailing arm. This eliminates any welding on the axle and works better than the shorter stock bar setup.

Re: Rear Axle Assembly swap - trackbar mount

When you weld it weld in short sections and let it cool. Dont weld it all at one time because it will pull the tube around and can mis-align the ends. I second the long track bar.

Re: Rear Axle Assembly swap - trackbar mount

I like that idea. The Early Classic one is for 65-72. If I could find one for a 62 I might go that route.

Re: Rear Axle Assembly swap - trackbar mount

Thanks for the info - I ordered the long trackbar for 60-62 from CPP.

Re: Rear Axle Assembly swap - trackbar mount

CaptainFab has the correct saddles to weld on to the new housing. Look in the 60 to 66 for sale section for any of his ads and send him a PM.

Re: Rear Axle Assembly swap - trackbar mount

Trailing arm mounts from CaptainFab worked great.. CPP Trackbar, not so much. The trailing arm mount for the trackbar won't allow the shock to connect. See attached. Had to trim the CCP trailing arm mount to clear.

Re: Rear Axle Assembly swap - trackbar mount

That is the mount for 63 and up. The one for 60 to 62 is shorter than that one. Look at the box they sent it in and see what it says.

Looks wrong and not the same as what is pictured on the site. Now the fun starts dealing with their customer service.

Re: Rear Axle Assembly swap - trackbar mount

Yeah - I made it work - didn't want to go through the hassle of shipping back and waiting. A warning to anyone else doing a 60-62 though. Make sure CPP sends you the right trackbar mount before you tear down. Odd thing was they sent the right length trackbar, but the wrong mount.

Good news is I'm back on the road with 308 gears - I can drive 70 all day now!
