R4 compressor
I have an 83 GMC with A/C that will actually work fine for awhile when I charge it, but has a leak in the factory R4 compressor.
I'm guessing putting seals in one of these isn't easy, so thought I might just get a new compressor. Rockauto has everything from a $113 closeout "Vista Pro" to a $202 AC Delco. I'm guessing new would be safer than rebuilt, and where all should I replace O rings in the system before I recharge it? |

I dumped all my R4s & went Sanden.

I'm familiar with Sandens as that's what my Jeeps have, but won't that require new/ different compressor mounting brackets as well?

They run about $50. I made my own for about $5. Not as nice but works just fine.

Is there a particular source you can recommend for brackets? Anything else needed to swap to a Sanden style?
Is there an inherent design flaw in the R4 or what? Mine works fine when charged, but has a leak in the compressor. What is the benefit of the Sanden (I'm guessing that's the A6 model compressor I see listed, right?) |

This isn't what you need, but I've used two of these on serp front engines.

The r4 is the Vega of the compressor world. They work, but don't work as good as others. They like to leak (As you already know) They shave piston rings off & clog up the orifice tubes & don't never ever use one of the "Variable Displacement" r4s! |

Interestingly enough, Dad's 95 GMC apparently has an R4 that recently crapped out too. Wonder if I shouldn't do the same thing with his?
