Legal Question

Are the clear tail light lenses legal? I bought a set and have the red bulbs.

I know here they are illegal, but I also know a lot of people run them here and never get pulled over, no one enforces that law in this state, its probably different there though.

i think that it matters on the state your in...... every state is different i bet, just like every states life laws are different. but if your out of state and get pulled over you can argue that in your state they are legal and your passing through

I was the network administrator for the Mississippi Highway Patrol up until last year (switched to Federal), and I asked the same question. Being on the 'inside' with the officers, the answer was actually "It is up to the arresting officer's disgression". If he is in a bad mood, he can ticket you for it. Our law says that there must be a red reflector on the rear of the vehicle. The loop hole is that it does not have to be part of the tail lamp assembly. As long as the bulbs show up as red when applied, you are okay. The reflector can be a sticker (like you see on the rear doors of big rigs) as long as it is on the rear. At least that is the word out of MHP headquarters legal department, Jackson, Mississippi. I know that doesn't help in your state, but just incase you ever move to Mississippi.
:p

Same in Texas as Mississippi. There must be a red
reflector on the back of the truck "MOST" inspection places would not pass the truck with the clear lenses. I was told the cops mainly use it as reason to pull you over.

The cops here in town say that it is an illegal modification of tail lights.
