rearend lubed!!!!
Hey so I relubed my rear end this weekend. It was my first time ever doing it, I got a little greasy but I was happy to find that my gears are all good and healthy, no shavings any where. put a little red paint on the rear end cover....it wasn't sticking to well even after I cleaned it up, but oh well....it got the effect i wanted.
Thanks to all you guys who helped me out.... I used a felpro gasket, RVT sealant and 80w90 Slick-50 gear lube. works great...I'm happy.

You added slick-50, or they have there own brand of gear oil now?
Slick 50 is not something you want to put in your engine, I haven't seen any tests on diff aplications, but don't put it in you engine. |

I didnt put it in my engine.....it is Slick-50 rear lube. It specifies that it can be used in rear differentials, 4x4 diffs, transfer cases, standard transmission.....oh yeah that stuff is out there....thats funny you are the 2nd guy to mention to me that you have never seen slick-50 rear end oil. did I do something wrong????? not that it says much, but the guy at oreillys said that was what I could use....

I wouldn't do it personally, they slick 50 engine additive is not a good thing, (it has been documented too) and I would personally steer clear of anything that says slick 50 on it. But, like I said, i have no proof that there oils are not good,a nd in all reality, a diff is pretty forgiving too.
Even if it has that PTFE garbage in it, it is probably better than the 30 year old oil that was in it. I wouldn't worry about it too much. |

Just did this on the 70' about a week ago. As soon as I got done I had a buddy coming over so I could install his new amp for his stereo. I tossed him a rag that I scooped out the old oil sittin in the dif. and had him smell it. He griped about his hand smelling the whole time he was here.

Funny story, I worked with an asian man for a few years a while back. Very nice man, but did not have a complete grasp of the english language and its many facets. He came in from the field one day driving his Ford Ranger 4x4. One of the other guys commented on the oil leak on his diff and said he had better take it over to the garage and " tell them you have a crack in your rear end and would like them to fill it with grease". Off he went to the garage.
