about to jump into a disc brake conversion and lowering job, few last min questions
so im about to order everything to do a disc brake conversion and to lower my truck. i just want to make sure im not missing anything, and ask a question or two before i spend a **** ton of money lol
the truck in question is a 1969 c20, all stock, coil spring rear. the intent is to lower it 3.5 in the front and 6 to 7 in the rear, so the brake swap is honestly happening just to support that idea, because to be honest im pretty content with the manual drum brakes. here are the parts i have currently: 16 inch steel wheels, rotors, complete tie rod assemblies, and calipers all from a 1982 c20 suburban. and here is my list of parts im about to order: 2.5 drop spindles(from pol, for an 82 c20) inner/outer wheel bearings (82 c20) upper/lower balljoints (82 c20) brake pads (82 c20) springs(pol, 1 inch front, 6 inch rear, for a 67-72 c10) shocks(pol, 1 inch front, 5 inch rear, for a 67-72 c10) rear shock relocator kit (pol, for a 67-72) adj panhard bar (pol, 65-72 c10/c20) 1 inch rear blocks (pol, 60-72 c10/c20) 225/75r16 tires booster/master cylinder/prop valve(this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/142300152957) and what brake lines do i need to order to go from the hard lines to the calipers? does anyone see anything im missing? ive been researching this one for a good little while, and i THINK ive got everything in order, but may have overlooked something small. any other suggestions, tips, advice, opinions, etc feel free to share! |

You said " complete tie rod assemblies ". Do you mean including center link, idler arm and pitman arm? If you don't have those, you'll need them too. AFAIK the center link is not available new.

no, meaning i have the inners, outers and adj sleeves. i was under the impression that the centerlink/idler/pitman on my truck would work with the newer inner tie rod ends.

Your original parts won't work with the 82 stuff. The size and taper will be wrong. It will fit together, but not tight, and not safe.

ok, thanks for the info. looks like i just avoided a problem. so ok, switch out to the 82 center link, idler and pitman. now will that pitman arm work with my steering box just fine or is that going to be a point of contention too?

Should be no problem, but manual and power boxes use different arms.

gotcha. its a manual steering set up right now, and i dont have any plans to change that anytime soon ,so that should be a simple change. so any idea what brake lines i need to buy to go from caliper to truck?

I think the 82 hoses will be way too long. Measure to confirm.Hose for a 72 C20:
( right side as example) http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....31791&jsn=1344 Forgot to add, You may need adapters for the lines. Also, measure that the length of these is correct, because 69 and 72 mount the hoses in different locations. The 82 calipers are metric and the banjo bolt won't fit right in the 72 hoses. You need pre-78 calipers to use those hoses. Or, if you use the 82 calipers, assemble everything, measure, and find a hose that fits. I used metric calipers on my 910 and ended up using 80 Camaro hoses, no adapters needed. Last edited by ratty69; 04-15-2017 at 11:36 AM. Reason: add info |
