1970 with SM465 - clutch pedal return spring removal

I'd like to remove my pedals to put a coat of paint on em but that return (helper?) spring looks like a beast, any input on how to safely get this thing off?

Remove the stop plate bolted on the underside of the dash, pull the pedal farther back. It will release the rest of the tension

I have used a long skinny straight screwdriver through the hole and pried down and out. Did similar to install it. Kind of like a brake spring plier would do.

Be *REAL* careful futzing around with that assembly. Many years ago, I was pulling mine out, and the pedal arm got tapped, and the spring pulled it up over-center and lopped off the end of my finger in the process. That spring is No-$#!+ serious.

Webfoot, make sure you order the nylon bushings before you disassemble, if you want to reassemble right after you paint. I wanted to put my pedals back in last week. Thought I would just run out and get the bushings. I had to order the 3/4" and 1" bushings from classic truck parts, and it took a few days to deliver. I was tempted to use my originals, then decided to wait for shipping.

Palallin, thanks for the heads up! I have my assembly apart and am putting it back together tonight or tomorrow. The loop looks perfect for end of finger guillotine. Whenever you thrash or cut fingers it ruins the rest of the project trying to avoid the finger. Hope it grew back.

They sewed it back on, almost right--the bone is not lined up correctly. I have about 90% use but no feeling to speak of.
