Saturday's Adventure

My friend in Owatonna, MN had his annual spring party on Saturday.
Some friends and I decided to drive 'Old Stuff' down there on the side roads for fun.

Something prodded me to look at the file I have on Ol Blue, and to my surprise I found some interesting stuff.

The truck originally came from Owatonna, sold at a place called Ed's Repair.
The owner was also from the area on RR1, so armed with this info I set out Sat morning hoping to put some pieces together.

Now I've been to Lee's place many times and never really paid attention but as I approached his shop literally 3 doors down was Ed's Repair!!

I kind of got the chills seeing it still there, it's no longer a dealership but Lee said they sold trucks for years. The son still runs it and the former showroom is filled with pictures from the old days, unfortunately it was closed so I couldn't take a tour.

Lee really liked my truck and I showed him a pic I have with the factory steel wheels on prior to me getting it, he said "I think I have something for you".

He goes out back and brings up a set of 8 lug hubcaps all covered in dust!
I was shocked to see them and asked how much, "they're yours" he said...after a wash they're darn near perfect except 1 small ding in the side of 1 cap.

The former truck owner was the local insurance guy and has since passed away so I couldn't get a picture with him but I had to get one in front of the building before I left...

Needless to say it was a great day topped off by a little truck history and some free parts!

Some days life is really good!

That's really awesome! I wish I could track down where my truck was sold from. It's funny to think how many miles and years ago it was that your truck sat at that very same location when it was brand new.

That's an awesome day! My truck came from Winner SD originally, and I would love to be able to do what you did.

Great story, and what a nice guy to just give you a set of hubcaps.

Re: Saturday's Adventure

My 68' was sold new from Delta Junction,Alaska so I don't complain about the lack of air conditioning. If I could ever drive mine that far it would be a heck of a road trip! Great story about your truck!

Re: Saturday's Adventure

I hope, like your friend, that you put those caps to use and put the steelies back on.
Cool to see where it all started.

Re: Saturday's Adventure

Enjoyed reading about your Saturday adventure. Reminded me that I'd tried to contact the dealership in Romulus Mi. that sold my '71 1500 new. A year or so ago I left a couple of phone msgs. but got no response. I have good documentation on the truck, protecto plate, bill of sale, order sheet, orig. registration. Looking at the street view on MAPQUEST I see an old faded GMC TRUCKS neon sign on what appears to be a closed up business. I wonder if anyone on this site is familiar with Crova Sales, 37385 Goddard Rd. Romulus, Mi. 48174.
I'd love to have a return to the dealership adventure like yours. The last couple of months my truck has been aggravating my sciatic nerve and KILLIN' my right hip, thigh & knee. I think my ol' GMC would make a 2500mi road trip just fine but I'd be mighty uncomfortable.

Re: Saturday's Adventure

Thanks for the comments guys.
I really enjoy the history of things, so it was pretty cool to be in the spot where the truck originated in MN.

I will have to hunt for some 8" steelies to accompany the hubcaps (Lord knows I need another project...)

My other truck I'm building came from the Fargo/Moorhead area.

I hope to make that trip once it's finished...

Possibly this may spark some of you to make a trip like this someday. I promise you wont regret it, and even if you come up empty you're still cruising in your truck and that's a good day!

That would be a trip but if you're up for it I guarantee it would be fun!
