Re: Crapped Out Parts
Jesse, thats awesome! That's how I'm doing my truck, at least to the best I can. All original GM as much as I can. Seems a lot of people want perfect or don't even want to bother. I had a set of fenders and doors at Carlisle with very reasonable prices on them, the one door needs a very small amount of work but people would just feel that there was rust under it and be like naww, my doors are better. Screw it, I'm going to keep it and spend an hour or two on it and have two rust free OE doors.

Re: Crapped Out Parts
I have a lot more than a few hours into my doors, but yeah, OEM is better. Mine had what looked to be very little rust on the outside until I opened them up. I cut off the lower outer skin and replaced the corners and a couple other small areas on the inners.
The outer skin only had a couple pinholes, but I cut out a much larger area that had heavy pitting, I tried to save most of the skin. I didn't show it, but that front fender also got a new "cup." I am picky with dent damage. Especially around the wheel wells because the arches are difficult to bang back into shape. Id rather fix a rust hole on a straight panel than a rust free one that has a big dent on the wheel arch or bodyline. I paid up for it, but the bed I bought was ridiculously nice. Zero, and I mean zero, rust anywhere. It has a few small patches of surface rust that almost wipe off

Re: Crapped Out Parts
Well yea, as always it will be more work than it appears on the outside but, it'll be right, and it will be original, plus I have no money in that door as it is, sooo that's a lot better than the 250 some one like Arizona Steve gets for a rust free one.

Re: Crapped Out Parts
Both my trucks are 100% GM sheet metal. I meant Dave's drum assemblies wouldn't work well on a pay it forward thread, unless local, due to heavy shipping. That goes for anything big and heavy no matter how desirable to how many.
Jerry Brown was buying up doors to repair vs using repop on his high dollar gems. BTW, it's sad to know he's out of it due to poor health. That's a Chevy truck icon gone from our truck world.

Re: Crapped Out Parts
There are guys out west parting trucks out that I would love to fix and drive. In the past ten years the trucks in my area have all disappeared. When scrap went to 250 a ton. People hauled every setting vehicle available to the yards. I can't even find a decent long bed to replace the one on my truck that you can almost see all the way through. I would drive a descent way for a good bed. It seems like all the good beds are getting cut down for short beds. My truck is a work truck not a show truck but I would like it to look nice and be presentable at a job site or picking the kids up at school. I think bartering or trading for parts and helping each other out is what its all about as well as putting these vehicles back on the road. Unfortunately there are very few in my area with these trucks.
I have gotten great advise and help from people of this board and if not for a few here my truck would probably have been sold by now. Thanks to all that are not in it only for the money, but for the love of these trucks. |

And here I am seriously debating buying a '67 shortbed truck that is literally a frame and half a stripped cab (no floor, no glass, doors, panels, wiring), no box, no front clip, no drivetrain.... with an ownership....for $1,500..... |
