Decoding Rear end?

Hey there, is there a way to decode a rear end based on stampings? Just would like to know what gear and all I have? I know best way is to just pull cover, but was curious if you could without pulling.
Also if there is more places I should be looking lemme know, just starting to clean it up. Thanks in advance.

Re: Decoding Rear end?

Slide a jack under your differential, jack it up til both back tires are off the ground, chock your front wheels, put it in your final 1:1 gear as I recall, put a starting mark on one of your rear tires, do a full rotation from 12 o'clock on the tire to 12 o'clcok again and count how many rotations your drive shaft mad. If your drive shaft made about 3.75 turns for one rotation of the tire, ie., then you have probably the 3.37 gearing. If it made a lil over 4 turns, then you probably have the 4:11 gearing and so on....

Re: Decoding Rear end?

In looking at this thread, WA is a 3.73 open diff from a shortbed in '63 or '64. And looking at the casting date, I would say it is a '64.
