need help with paint colors under hood
Can any body tell me what color the hood hinges are supposed to be on my '68, or are they even supposed to be painted. Also I have a picture of a truck showing the hood latch being painted silver, is that correct?

I have only seen hood hinges rust colored but I think semi-gloss black would be appropriate. Hood latches came semi gloss black, same as the rad support.

The hinges on my 68 were not painted from the factory. Are you talking about the actual hood catch? I'll check on that tomorrow if you want.

Actually, I need to know about both. If you have a chance to take a look, that would be great.

I just got back into town tonight. I'll see if I can get a moment to take some pictures tomorrow.

Well Gee-Emm was about right on the money rust appears to be the correct color!
My hinges appear to be just raw metal. I don't see any real finish on them. You could clean them up and finish them with some kind of natural finish that several automotive suppliers have. I can't thing of any right now. Inner Hinge

Hey, a good rust-o-leum primer and three light coats of flat black
are the finishing touches on a well detailed engine compartment. $.02

I am struggling with what to do. I want it to be original, but am not happy with just cleaned. Might try some clear, or maybe some sort of flat silver (not aluminum).

I'd shoot 'em satin black like you have the rest of the engine bay...

I think like a flat steel wheel color would be pretty sharp and look pretty original.
You might just clean them up, get the rust off and see how they look. Ask the folks at Eastwood (www.eastwood.com) what you should use to preserve the appearance and keep them from getting rusty again. Let me know what you find out. I'd like to do the same to mine. Nice looking engine bay!

Like my Chevelle's hinges, they were phosphate gray from the factory. This color looks like a cast gray or dull aluminum color. I used Eastwoods 'detail gray' and they look great. Same with the latch, together they will look correct.

if you want them to be original looking, sand blast them and clear coat them. It'll look bare, but be protected. Onless you are doing a 1000 point trailer queen, then no one (judges) will notice the clear coat.
