Stock 1972 C10

New to the forum, and been on message boards close to 20 years now so I know how this all goes with the search function, but not for nothing, this forums search function isn't the most user friendly.

Recently picked up a original paint 72 C10 Custom Deluxe and trying to return it back to stock after the previous owner(s) put some aftermarket parts on it.

Any help or direction would be much appreciated.

• My truck came with rally wheels but I want to put the stock steelies with hub caps. What's the stock 15" wheel and hub cap combo? Offset? What should I be looking for when finding a used set on the web or at the swap?
  Pretty sure the custom deluxe came with the full chrome cap, and the others came with the center "dog dish" hub caps?
  
• What's the stock tire size that would have came from factory?
  It came factory with the 350, disc brakes, 5-lug and springs all around if that makes any difference for the questions I'm asking.
  
• Does the 67-68 steering wheel bolt right onto the later model columns? it came with some mickey mouse racing wheel, and if I'm going to switch out I like the earlier steering wheels.
  
• I'm sure most step bumpers look alike, but what's the factory step bumper look like? The SPID stated it had a step bumper originally installed.

I don't know (but I'm pretty sure they do) if a 67/68 steering wheel goes right on,but they look completely different. I happen to like the later one's better.

I like the dog dish hubcaps more than the full sized one's but they can be a little hard to find as they are not reproduced. But they're out there.

I can't help you with the wheels, I've got an eight lugger.

My GMC came with a step bumper, it just looked like a step bumper. Nothing special. I don't know it may have been replaced at some point.

I bought my steelies off ebay, you just need the size.

Yeah and I hate some of the joke steering wheels I see on a nice truck.

The SPID should show which caps were on yours. 67-72 did not have ralley wheels from the factory. Nice truck you have there

The '67/'68 wheel fits OK, but the tin horn ''cup'' is different, the '69/'72 is either deeper or shallower, ICRW.
You can get the right '60-'68 internal horn cup tin from The Truck and Car Shop of Orange [County, Calif.]. They also have the rubber insert for the horn button if yours is torn/deteriorated.
You may need the whole Horn Cap Retainer Kit.
'69 + later used a plastic trapeziodal horn button for the 2-spoke wheel.

Welcome and congrats on a great-looking truck.

There's more than one way to search this board. Go to the little box at the top right of the page, enter your search criteria, select the "67-72chevytrucks.com" button (instead of the "Web" button), then click on Google. You'll get a list of board web pages that should help you.

The SPID should tell you OEM wheel & tire size, and you can use that info to figure out the wheel offset.

A lot of step bumpers were dealer add-ons -- I'm not sure what a factory one looks like. I know mine is aftermarket.

The Custom Deluxe came with chrome dog dish hubcaps. If it's a Highlander, it would have come with the special (from the Monte Carlo?) full wheel covers. The regular truck full wheel cover was also available as a separate option and as a dealer accessory.

Welcome to the site and it looks you bought a nice drivable truck in one of the nicest color combos. If you post a picture of the spid label on the inside of the glove box door we can tell you exactly how your truck was equipped form the factory. Does your truck have plaid seat? If so its a Highlander and looking at your exterior mirrors if its Highlander a lot of times you'l find them with recovered seat as over the years they got changed out. I'm attaching a picture of a factory bumper and the factory RPO Code is V43 which would be on your spid able. Alos included is a list of whats in a (Z62) Custom/Deluxe Package.

Stock hub caps for the Custom Deluxe were the white hub caps with the blue bow tie and black trimmings as depicted below. An upgrade that many ordered were the chrome version of the same cap, RPO PO3. If it is a highlander package truck (YG6,7,8) the half ton would also possibly come with PA1 Full Wheel Covers - ala Monte Carlo as mentioned above. If it has highlander "plaid" trim code, but no YG6,7,8 RPO on the SPID, then it could have any cap type, stock or optional. Full Wheel Covers, PO1 were also available as options. Stock wheel size is 15x6, with 15x5 optional. Rallies not an option, those were from the square body years and look great on our trucks, but, like you, I prefer white steelies. Sorry don't know the offset of the wheels. Stock tire size is G17-15 which equates to 215-75-15 (H78-15 optional and that would be a 225-75-15 today). I'd make sure to buy 71+ Gm steelies - it's an issue with 6 lugs anyway (pre-71 didn't clear calipers, whereas post70 did) - but I'm not sure if this rule applies to earlier car 5 lug steelies as compared to 71+ 5 lug steelies (anyone know? Never thought about this before!)

All standard equipment except the 350, so you should see the 350 called out on the SPID.

Check the parts board, and place a WTB ad if you need something specific, folks here are great at coming up with parts - the steelies should be an easy find off one of the part outs - preferably close to your home so you can grab them rather than ship. 5 lugs are pretty common.

welcome and nice truck...I find it funny that you say you want to return it back to stock,but then want a 67-68 steering wheel, nothing wrong with that just was funny.....I have done a few things to my 72 like add a 71 rear view mirror ,dont like the glue on ones....little things like that but we have that option.....post pics as you go!!

Thanks Jocko for the definitive complete answer. We can tell you more about how your truck left the assembly plant with a photo of the SPID, (service parts indentification decal) located inside glove box door.

Here's an update though with all the info provided.

Got stock steelies with 71 date code.
Have Blue Bow-Tie white caps on the way.
Putting on a non deluxe white bumper up front and a step bumper in the back.
Waiting on finding a 71-72 wheel. No more early wheel. Trying to keep it all stock.

Next question is that it came with the "rare" tool box, but no key! I was told by a local c10 guy who's been in the game for a while, that I can try to get it unlocked by jamming a screwdriver up behind the latch and then get a new key made with the tumbler. Any other ways of getting it open? Or order a new key?

Also here's the SPID. After research and a the same c10 guy look at it he said it wasn't a Highlander, even though it was equipped with a lot of the same options.
