Stock Bell Housing with a BBC

I am putting a BBC into my 66 C30 and was wondering if I HAVE to use the SBC flywheel or can I use a BBC flywheel (153 teeth vs 168 teeth)? My concern is that the starter will be out of location with the larger flywheel if I use the original starter mounted on the bell housing. Or will a block mount starter work with the stock bell housing? Thanks!

I put a 396/425hp engine(65 or 66 year model I bought brand new) in a '55 chevy CAR using a '57 v-8 chevy car starter, retaining the original bellhousing with its orig. motor supports. The 55 Chevy car originally used the starter that bolted to the bellhousing quite similar to our trucks. If it fit that ap., so much older than our 60-66 trucks, I'd think the big block would fit our trucks likewise.

Did I say I don't know and that I have never done what you asked?

HTH,
Sam

Small block chevy's come in both 153 and 168 tooth flywheels… pretty sure all truck flywheels - bell housings are 168 tooth - 14" set ups. As far as BBC flywheels …396-427 are internal balance 454 are external balance, requiring a weight on the flywheel. And yes you can modify the the stock cast iron bell housing to use the block mounted starter, but the original style starter works just fine.

X2

While the 454 flexplates do have a weight on them (much like a SB 400 flexplate but not interchangeable) the 454 flywheels are simply drilled to be in balance.

Are you sure capt? The factory ones I have here have a small rectangular area cast into them on the front near the outer edge, the billet flywheels I've got have a weight on the front held on with countersunk allen bolts.

Well maybe I'll have to check the 454 flywheel I have. I think it is an original.
