Newbie... is this truck worth it?

Hello everybody I'm a long time lurker but I finally found a truck I may buy. The owner wants 5,400 for it. Says the bodies pretty solid except a smashed front fender. Has the factory interior, stock rear and transmission but converted to floor shift. Has a 350 in it. Has plywood down in the bed, is it possible to remove it and put the factory set-up back in? Just lemme know what you guys think. He says frame is really solid.

I'd be going over that whole truck with a magnet to make sure it's not a bondo job.....plus it's just another 350 truck so nothing special at all. I wouldn't give anything more than 3k for it.....just me.

Short Fleet with a small back window standard cab. Very cool. The old bed wood is probably still underneath. You can have a new kit installed with bolts and bed strips if you do it yourself for about $500. Not that hard. I can find a donor fender in my area off CL in a moment's notice or get the repo for about $200 (not recommended unless your good with a drill) Talk him down to $4200 or keep looking. It has been lowered with aftermarket wheels and all so make sure the driveshaft is in line with the diff and tranny or youll burn up u-joints. Take a look under the cab and make sure the frame isnt welded on or rusted along with the cab supports and it would be a great starter project.

Also check the inside and outside around the window.

You really are not going to know if it's worth the $ unless you go look and crawl under, over, in and around. Look at cowl area also, toe boards and cab mounts.

Good luck!!

For what I can see it looks pretty good. Shame he sprayed it black. That may all come off with enamel reducer. Take a really good look at it and drive it. For the east coast and what trucks that are solid are going for here that price is a little high but not a lot if it is in fact as solid as it looks in the picture with the door open. You just don't see many. The west coast guys have it a lot better than us east coast rust belt folks.

Before I even read any posts, my first thought was $3000 max.

Re: Newbie... is this truck worth it?

Before you pull the trigger, do yourself a favor and take it to a local garage that can put this on a lift. Check underneath for rust and damage. I'm from California so this looks like a good price PROVIDED there is not a lot of hidden damage and rust. A bent frame or serious rust issues will cost you more than the price of this truck.

Good Luck, Cris

If there's little to no rust, it's probably a good deal in New York.

He says the doors and floors are solid. Bedsides I don't see any rust but the underneath does look a little bit more rusty. I'm thinking there's more hidden than what I see but it's hard to find a decent truck around here....

A mild magnet is your friend when inspecting primered sheet metal.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: Newbie... is this truck worth it?

Did you ask the seller or did you go see it and crawl under over and put your hands on it?

Re: Newbie... is this truck worth it?

I looked at the CL ad and there is rust on this truck. Its just a matter of how bad. Heck the heater box and blower under the hood is heavily pitted.

Even in California they rust in the sensitive spots.
