OT: impala SS

anyone know much about these cars? the 94-96 models with the lt1's.

i graduate soon and i want to start looking around for a decent car to drive around. i thought my dad may be able to find one or something at one of his dealer auctions.

how would insurance be on one?

i was also thinking about a pre96 Ford taurus SHO. though i would like the rwd impala more

94-96 impala SS = big $$$ even with tons of miles. Deffenatley not the car to get when you want cheap and value. The SHO's ha dtheir share of electrical problems but were good cars and started the import 3.0-3.5L v6 war thats going on now.

impala ss kicks ass... I may buy one sometime in the future too...but I also want an 85 or 86 monte carlo (black) to soup up.. There's just too many nice US cars.. can't have em all

I love a dropped SS with some nice 17" rims, preferrably a black car.

Why not just find a 94-96 Caprice cop car at the auction. Basically the same car, but cheaper.

It could easily me modded to look like an SS.

I don't like the fact that the rear wheels sit too far forward in the wheelwells on those cars...

A 1996 Impala SS w/ 50K miles goes for about $20,000 in my area. Not bad.....

I have had 2 96 SS cars and a 94 Roadmaster. They are really great cars, and the prices are coming down. The only trouble I have had are that they eat EGR valves. That is a pretty easy fix. They are big, roomy, comfortable, and pretty quick for how big they are. If you can't afford an Impala SS, the Roadmaster, Fleetwood, and Caprice are all pretty much the same car. I think a Fleetwood would make a killer sleeper, but I like big cars. I think the wagons are really cool, too. The other great thing about the LT1 is that the bottom end is identical to the 350's since '86. They use the same crank, bearings, etc. and the B body engines are cheap in the junkyard, if something was to go wrong.

Stay AWAY from the SHO's at any cost. The V6 models were plagued with manual tranny problems (although the engine was fantastic...Yamaha designed) and electrical problems and the later V8 models were plagued with camshaft gear problems (as in they would shear the key, ruining the engine). Do an internet search. There are disgruntled SHO owners everywhere.

Hey man, the 96 Impala is my dream car. Try www.autotrader.com There are some good one most of the time. I have researched these cars inside and out. I've never heard of any complaints. They only weigh 400 lbs. more than camaros. They are killer cars. Good Luck. Hopefully I'll get one and leave my 84 as a project.

my friend had a early 90's SHO, very fast, even with 6 people in the car, but he went through like 5 trannies in a year....... he also had a supercharged Thunderbird, 4cyl i think, the turbo went in that, but it was a great car for $500.

Great Choice!

I've owned a Black 96 since day one. Only gripe I have with the car is the suspension. Those big wheels play havoc with the front end. Nothing MOOG problem solvers can't fix though. 94-95 tend to be cheaper because of no floor shift or tach option (it was only available on the 96's) They are in HIGH demand. If you do get one make sure it is the real deal. To many fakes out there. Easy way to tell is to check the door sticker to see if the car came stock with 255 50 ZR rated tires. There is a discussion forum like this one where owners sell their rides also. Most of the time these are authentic and have been taken care of. Check them out.

I am selling my 96 Impala SS .. Black ...60K miles ... Nice but not perfect ... this is the last production year and the only year with console shift and analog gauges (speedo & tach) ..small wear on driver side seat, few paint chips ...could use new rear tires ... comes with set of police rims for winter tires... $10,500 .. or $11,000 if I put new ball joints and tire rods in it ... It located in NYC area (10301) ... but it would make the trip cross country without a problem... I am trying to get out of debt and work on my 71 C/10 ... I love the car but something has got to give ... I am also trying to get my harley back together ... to many toys, not enough time or money ... let me know...

SHO's are great cars, Other than the tranny problems. My dad had one up to about 130k. He went through a lot of tranny work to keep it running that long. FWD + 5 speed = No fun doing tranny work.

Yamaha Designed 6CYL = fun.

Might want to look at pontiac grad prix gtp. Will out run both impala and SHO. Very easy to make mods to because of the super charger.
