Power steering and Front Diff Question--68 K10.
I ran across what I believe is a 71 Suburban 4x4 and was wondering if the front axle would swap directly to my 68 K10 SWB? Upside is it has disc brakes and the same ratio.
Also, it has power steering --looking at my bolting arrangement it doesn't look the same--are these adaptable to a 68? The 68 non power box has 3 bolts and the Suburban's got 4. Thanks, Dave |

It'll bolt right up, the 4th hole needed is in the frame already

Durned if I'm not seeing it. I'll snap a reference photo of my frame and steering box. Arrangement for the springs also seems different. Burb is in line with the frame and mine are outboard.

Is the frame completely flat in that spot or does it appear to be kind of dimpled in?

The Burb had an obvious dimple but my 68 appears flat.

Any further insights from the folks here? On either the diff or the box. The box has me puzzled when I read many of the other posts on interchanging these. Thanks, Dave

If it is truly a 68, you may have a left over 67 frame

The axle would be a direct swap. You have to change the brake lines around a bit. My 71 K10 is on a 69 SWB 4x4 frame so I had to change the lines around to hook up my disc brake hoses and master.

Thanks folks. Yeah, someone said the same thing about a carry-over frame. Frame number, VIN plate and SPID and such all match but wouldn't that be my luck! Not sure what I'll need to do in this instance or if I can adapt power steering easily?

They make a bracket to shim the p/s box out. Your pitman arm and idler arm won't be parallel anymore which should affect your turning radius some.
How's the Suburban otherwise? I hate seeing Suburbans going to waste

Thanks, I saw the bracket--I believe Captainfab here makes one.. Hate to weld and drill this original frame though.
The Burb is pretty rough but a few good bits on her. Factory posi rear end, wondering if I should grab that as well. Only so much space.... |
