1967 GMC Frame Vin Number
I am having a hell of a time trying to register my new to me 67 GMC stepside. After 2 trips to my local DMV, they want CHP to verify the 2nd vin number on the truck. Then after a 4 week wait for a appointment, CHP told me that they cannot find the 2nd vin number and there for they think the truck does not have the original frame. So now he says I have to come back for another appointment to have the person HE TRAINED to look at it to check.....
I am pretty sure the frame is original to the truck, looks fine and the body mounts are still riveted to the frame. Also, it still has rear leaf spring suspension and the correct cross member for the 3 on the tree transmission which is still riveted on the frame. The truck came with a 250/3 on the tree and is very original. I decoded the vin and it has exactly the same equipment on it as it did in 67. Short bed GMC Fenderside I6 250/ 3 on the tree with a dana 44 rear end with 3.54 gears which is all there. I read somewhere that 67 GMC trucks did not have any vin stamping on the frame including on top of the drivers side frame rail under the cab and on top of the drivers side frame rail by the power steering pump. I looked in both places and I cannot see a number anywhere no traces NOTHING. The title and cab vin match obviously so there is no problem there. Also there is a VIN tag inside the original maintenance book that came with the truck that matches the vin on the driver door jamb. Now I have to wait another SIX WEEKS for another CHP officer to look at the truck for a 2nd vin verification. Does anyone know for sure if 67 GMC trucks did not have a vin on the frame? Any other places I can look? very irritating, I have tons of parts already and a paint appointment. Need some help.

Re: 1967 GMC Frame Vin Number
It's true, GMC didn't stamp them there on all '67s. I don't know how you could convince someone who knows the laws but not these trucks. But that is a fact. If a stamped number is ground off, heating it with a torch will bring them out...and it won't on yours because they were never there.

Re: 1967 GMC Frame Vin Number
Is there a official website or document I can print and bring to the CHP? They obviously don't know what they're doing even though I told them there are no vin numbers on the frame.

Re: 1967 GMC Frame Vin Number
I ran into this same problem with the vin on an old car.
sadly the police inspector was less knowlegable than the DMV I cleaned up all vin locations so anything could be seen with the naked eye. drop lites handy and all that. I took digital photos and had images on paper available that looked exactly like the vin stanped in various locations. I had documentation from a service manual that showed where the vin number could be located and each location indicated in the manual was also cleaned up very well and again those images reflected what the manual showed and what the vin on the vehicle showed. I had the title, the pictures, the manual and everything all laid out very orderly In my case, the engin vin, the body vin and the frame vin were all the same. and they matched the title...go figure! It to a while, like 5 weeks. it goes very smoothly when you are legit, Nobody but a fool would provide so much falsified documentation . When your paperwork is square and your ducks are in a row. they know your legit. Its the squirrles that raise attention. the process is pretty much the same in Delaware and Arizona. Above all, and this is very important!!! limit any and all conversation to the very specific and narrow topic of titleing that vehicle, and try not to have a buch of other cars around that you may want to title later and dont talk about transfering ownership by any means prior to this . I have a family memeber who owns a motel. Any time I want a title for a vehicle, he applies for an abandoned vehicle title and mearly states that the renter abandoned the vehicle when he left in the dead of night, and left some outstanding debts too. Dont talk about anything with DMV other than the very narrow and spicificly focused subject of applying for the title to that vehicle, Even the most idle piffle banter or nervous blather can open endless cans of worms. keep at it and percivere. Your dealing with a beauracracy. its all about the paperwork. and be nice to them, offer them a cold bottled water or coffee or ice tea or som chit, but be nicest Last edited by mike16; 05-14-2017 at 02:11 AM. |

Re: 1967 GMC Frame Vin Number
Im curious how come you have to go through all of this. You have a truck you just purchased, Im assuming (maybe that's my problem) that you got a bill of sale and a title signed off ... Why would they bother going through all this extra trouble?
Cant count the amount of cars and trucks Ive sold over the years and this sort of thing has never happened. I did have a missing title 55 two door sedan that I got screwed over when I was a kid ... lesson learned on no title vehicle you plan on using and not parting.

Re: 1967 GMC Frame Vin Number
Ahhh ! The republic of Ca
I've bought parts/builder trucks and taken the title to dmv to get them in my name just in case I lose the title I can replace it easily when the time comes . here they issue you a new Tn title but also register it and hand you a new tag even when I told them it won't be driven again for years . A while back all you needed was a written bill of sale , or you could just buy the new title ,now they register them all at the same time , makes it real easy when your ready to go on the road to just renew the registration . Never have I ever had to go through all these secondary inspection of frame vin checks I keep hearing about . keep searching the board the no VIN frame early GMC threads are already in here . Good Luck |

Re: 1967 GMC Frame Vin Number
Tell 'em you won't leave DMV until it's fixed and make them drag you out like on that United flight. Seriously I would be actually become more difficult and ask to speak to manager etc., of course be respectful but let them know how frustrated you are.

Re: 1967 GMC Frame Vin Number
Just FYI, I have a 71 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4. I sand blasted the frame to bare metal, no VIN stamped anywhere on the frame.

Re: 1967 GMC Frame Vin Number
Wasn't it also said that some earlier gmc's didn't come with a spid too.
That should help you with your problem. Seems too me like they just want too drag it out probally for fee's. Any competent person can search the no vin thing and understand its just the way it is. Also any competed inspector should be able too tell if the truck has been disassembled. .yes it can be tough, but that's why they should be trained. We might have the rust, but we don't have these sorta problems.

Re: 1967 GMC Frame Vin Number
I should add that I bought the truck for Georgia so this is why I had to have the truck weighed and a vin verification done. I tried calling one of those registration services places and they told me that since I already started the process with CHP that they cannot help me. I will try the number in the newspaper add. I'm just glad i'm not the only person with a GMC with no frame vin number.

Re: 1967 GMC Frame Vin Number
Maybe you should show the CHP inspector this thread. They're trained on current laws, depending on his/her age they may not know about these old beasts.
