I'm in disc brake trouble
Back in 2009 I bought a rear disc brake kit from Blackbird trucks and it has worked very well. I managed to hurt one of the rotors and can't find a replacement. I was told at the time that it was a 92 4x4 Chevy rotor but that wont work without machining. My truck is a 72 4x4 shortbed. Does anyone know of a source for a rotor like this? I'll buy an OEM rotor and have it machined if I have to but buying one outright would be easier. Oh yeah, I'm using 68 Caddy calipers with the e brake. Thanks guys!

Re: I'm in disc brake trouble
So it's stock running gear, six stud? Then this thread won't help much - http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=735442 ! But a TTT for you.
As an aside, I remember reading years ago that you had the Blackbird kit in your truck. I've got a Dana 60 kit in my truck with the Eldorado calipers. Been on the road about 15 months now (7000 miles). I've never had great park brake performance. Then a couple of months ago the calipers started leaking from the centre of the pistons. I now know faar too much about the inner workings of Eldorado calipers! Rebuilt both calipers and have fixed the leaks, but still have a rubbish park brake. How do your's perform?

Re: I'm in disc brake trouble
Thanks for the link Billhilly. Yeah my running gear is all stock with 6 lug hubs. This kit worked great and would still be working great if I hadn't screwed it up. Looks like I'm not the only one that has been in this spot. I'm just going to keep looking and try to find something that will work. My park brake works but not great. When I bought my kit they told me the rotors were for a 92 chevy 4x4. I have been looking online and I might find something that will work with machine work.

Re: I'm in disc brake trouble
What machining is required?
Just opening up the hub bore? I would get the rotor they say that fits, and have them machined.

Re: I'm in disc brake trouble
When i did mine i had to machine the axle where the rotor slips over, i figured you change more rotors than axles so i went that route

Re: I'm in disc brake trouble
This is a real longshot but a lot of rear disc brake kits are using Ford Explorer rear brakes lately, and older ones were using cadillac rears.

Re: I'm in disc brake trouble
I wanted to keep my 6 lug so i used 88-93 chevy four wheel drive rotors and late model gm metric calipers, mine work great, they don't lock up they just sit the truck down when braking hard. i don't have emergency brakes though. most people i've seen use eldorado brake calipers if you want e brakes.

Re: I'm in disc brake trouble
PROBLEM SOLVED! I checked the dimensions of the 92 rotors on line and they gave dimensions in mm. 16ths and decimals. So I went down to NAPA and had them bring out a 92 front rotor and laid it next to mine. They were identical except for the center bore size. I'm taking it to a machine shop to bore the center hole 1/2" and it will be perfect! Thanks for all the input you guys!!! $43 for the rotor and 6 studs. Back on the road soon.

Re: I'm in disc brake trouble
I've had their kit on my truck for 8 years until my right rear wheel came off and the truck sat down and rode on the rotor! Before I could get it stopped the rotor was flat on one side. Only thing I can figure is a stupid mistake of mine by not tightening the lug nuts good enough. I was lucky that I only had minimum damage.

Re: I'm in disc brake trouble
really not something I want to brag about a whole bunch! I'll betcha that's the last time for me. Somebody called the cops on me (like I did this on purpose for some horrible reason) Two squad cars showed up but when the first cop found out what happened he sent the other guy away and stayed with me with his lights going to protect my truck! He loved my truck and we had a great visit! GOD bless that thin blue line!
I have all the parts now that I need so all is good. |
