Fix door strap issue?

Has anyone ever come up with a permanent fix for the door strap issue? Like all the rest, my 87 had door straps that were failing. So I simply removed them. When I go to restore the door panels, I'd like to come up with a permanent fix for the door straps. Mine had the typical broken/missing chrome covers for the ends of the straps, as well as the straps being torn or broken on the ends where they connect to the doors.

Re: Fix door strap issue?

Seems like someone made some billet replacements for the caps on this site . As for the straps , as long as the screws are secure the oem style strap has worked well for me .

The caps was made by a member here if I remember correctly . The member made a few sets and sold them . Dont know if that was a one time shot or not .

Well I just found this . They are billet . This is the first I had seen a company make the billet ones . I may try these when it comes time to replace mine . https://allamericanbilletstore.com/1...dpsc81-91ss-p/

Re: Fix door strap issue?

Check out the restoring rusty thread. Greg ski made a metal bracket on the inside of his truck for those straps. I plan to add those to my truck similar to the way he fixed his up. I almost 100% sure thats the thread.

Re: Fix door strap issue?

I used some aftermarket straps on my 83 C20. I had to drill out the mounting holes and then I used some short grade 8 bolts to fasten the new straps to the door. The end caps that came with the strap were too small to work, so I had to buy some new end caps from Rock Auto for about $4 per cap (I think.) The chrome plating on those aftermarket caps fades off and shows scratches, but they will last a few years before that happens.

Scroll down on my post to see how they look. The straps are holding up well, but the chrome "plating" on the plastic edges has worn off and shows just a light gray color, which is ok for me. That plastic edging was just like a thin foil application. The straps do have a metal strap core, so they don't flex at all once you install them.
