Will 15x8s clear disk brakes?
I am currently looking at this conversion kit for my 70 c10. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ssb-a126-71
Right now my truck has 15x8 steelies on it and was wondering if anyone has any experience with fitment with this type of disk brake. The description says it will not work with stock wheels but the stock wheels I took off my truck were 15x5.5 so I am unsure it the wider wheel would fit. I appreciate any help. |

Got pics of the inside of your wheels?
Most of the old stamped wheels are for drum brakes and will not work, the ones welded to the center section are later wheels made for disc brake clearance.

Re: Will 15x8s clear disk brakes?
Do you know year or vehicle your steelies came from? If they are from a 71 or newer K10, then they should clear stock disk brake calipers. In 71, C10 wheels became 5 lug, so ya gotta be careful grabbing 6 luggers without knowing the lineage. This kit is 11.5" dia disks - factory 5 luggers are approx. 11.8", so this could be a good choice. The interference that a pre-71 6 lug wheel causes is because of the taper on the inside of the wheel disk - it's angled in and can rub a caliper.

I think what they mean is your drum brake wheels won't work. It states minimum wheel size is 15". Looks sweet. I might do this as well. Anyone know what calipers and pads this kit uses?

Re: Will 15x8s clear disk brakes?
i have 15x8 w/ 4.25" bs with mcgaughy classic drop spindles. the tie rod arm of the spindle hit the wheel weights so i had to do a little trimming. otherwise no issues.

Wow, not a fan of that rotor. That looks like a lot of slop around the lugs and it doesn't look to fit snug over the hub either??

Re: Will 15x8s clear disk brakes?
Yes, 15 x 8 wheels clear factory disc brakes. Only early wheels from drum brakes won't. Those would be from 1970 or older.

Re: Will 15x8s clear disk brakes?
Do your wheels have 3 nubs or 4 nubs? The 4 nub 8" will fit over discs, the 3 nub 8" will not.
I have to add, this is true for stock '71 up calipers and spindles, not sure about this kit... Rg

Re: Will 15x8s clear disk brakes?
I have 15x8 ET slot mags on the front of my 1972 GMC C15 with stock front disc brakes. They fit just fine.

Re: Will 15x8s clear disk brakes?
Hmmm - like the impala adapters, I wonder if the scarebird c10 adapters are designed to clear factory steel wheels.

Re: Will 15x8s clear disk brakes?
I would image you shouldn't have a problem. I did the same from CPP but I am running 15x10 upfront. I did have to use a little wheel space to clear the tie rod end and grind some on steering knuckle. I doubt you would run into the same problem I did.

If it is a disc wheel then yes!

Re: Will 15x8s clear disk brakes?
Thanks all for the replys. I check and my wheels appear to be the later welded style. I went forward with ordering the kit so we will see how the install goes.

Re: Will 15x8s clear disk brakes?
Since you guys are on the subject, do you think a 16" six lug wheel from a 68 would work on disc brakes?
I'm planning on running the CPP 6 lug disc conversion rotors with 71 calipers. Thanks.
