? about lowering rear axel

Hi Guys,

I've been fighting with installing my flip kit. I've had to drill out all the rivets on the rear shackle to attempt to get the leaf springs out. Cut the bolt for the front but can't get the leafs out...yet.

I lowered the rear axel (the opposite side I'm working on has the u bolts still attached). I couldn't bring it down enough to get the leafs out yet - I'm thinking this is because the opposite side is still attached.

My question is
Should I have disconnected the drive shaft from the diff before lowering the axel/diff? I'd hate to screw anything up that will further delay this project.

Drive shaft shouldn't be a problem. You can raise the rear axle and get the shackle bolt out over the frame (between the frame and the bed). Is the problem due to the bolts being rusted into the leaf spring bushing? Did you remove the shocks? They might be limiting the axle.

Thanks for the response Mike,

Yes the shock has been removed and yes the bolts are seized onto the bushings.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. The front spring bolt is cut and the rear I couldn't cut the bolt so I had to drill out the entire bracket that attaches to the frame - 5 rivets.

I have some free play but can't get it out and figure the only way is to drop the rear axel close to the ground...provided my brake lines have enough give.

So the rear hanger is detached from the frame? If so, and if you can get the front spring eye out of the hanger, you might be able to roll the spring outwards and get enough room to remove it????

Yes the hanger is detached. I've been trying to pry it out and push it off center but nothing yet. I'm sure once the axel is lowered further I should have a but less pressure on the springs...just wanted to make sure the driveshaft issue wont bite me in the arse later.
