I find it's easier to pull the springs first, still on the truck, than dealing with a sprung hinge. I hook a loop of 1'' tubular webbing [2',6'' - 3']' on the spring end, and step off the bumper, holding the other end of the loop using my body weight to stretch the spring. A little swing inboard and it's clear. Same move in reverse to reinstall the spring.

Every 25 years I like to rebuild that 292, whether it needs it or not.
