Aluminium Trim

What is on the outside of the aluminium trim and how do you get it off? I have heard that Easy-Off oven cleaner will do the trick. I sanded through it with alot of work and 220 grit. I then buffed it with a buffing wheel and the sanded spots look like chrome...the other stuff, where it did not sand through to the aluminium, still looks like s&!t.

Anodizing

When automotive manufacturers switched from chrome-plated steel to aluminum, they did so with the knowledge that the anodizing of the aluminum would insure the appearance for years to come. Without the anodizing, the aluminum would quickly lose it's luster and would react to the pollutants in an automotive environment. Now that these truck parts are at least 32 years old, it is apparent that anodizing doesn't last forever.

You found a way to get past the anodizing, but you also found that it isn't easy. There are people who know how to re-anodize them, but I don't know if it wouldn't be cheaper to just buy replacement trim parts....or just remove it altogether, like I plan.

Why not plug "anodizing" in to a search engine and see what pops up?

I had the same problem with my grille. It was a lot of work shine it and it doesn't stay nice for long. New grilles are so expensive. I've been trying to find someone locally that does anodizing , no luck yet.

You can buff it out real nice with the anodizing stripped off, but it wont last long at all without regular polishing. Anodizing protected it for 30 years. Probably lasts better than chrome. An anodizing house, can strip off the old and re-anodize it, but it's probably more expensive than new trim.

Jeepster376 is correct! Once you get it down to the raw aluminum and get it polished all you need to do is maintain it with autosol or any good quaility aluminum polish periodically. I personally would NEVER clearcoat polished aluminum, I have not seen a clearcoat yet that did'nt "yellow" over time (or turn a milky yellow). Once it yellows your back to square one and have to remove it and start over.
