'69 396 dipstick tube mount

Can someone please show me how the dipstick tube is supposed to be mounted?

My mount is a little tweaked and I think it may have been installed wrong.

Also, is there supposed to be an o-ring or seal where it goes in the pan? I didn't see one when I took it apart, but The Truck Shop sells one for $7.

I usually just put some GMS on it when I install to ensure no leaks.

A distributor cap wire boot --straight-- can offer some additional sealing. Tyraps or a small clamp will help hold it in place.

I googled GMS and couldn't find anything relevant. What is it?

I like that idea as a dust boot.

I can't get a useful pic unless I crawl under it but I used a new chrome holder and dipstick with the o-ring and then the "Dust" boot which I clamped on both ends. The boot also keeps it from pulling out. No leaks..

Just to clarify, I'm looking for photos for the mounting tab on the top of the dipstick by the exhaust manifold with the spark plug heat shields. I added a photo of my bent mounting tab.

Thanks for the photo, that helps confirm that the mounting tab goes on with the manifold bolt.

Does anyone have a photo of the dipstick mounted with the spark plug shields?

Re: '69 396 dipstick tube mount

Glenn, I just put a small o-ring on my dipstick tube where it fits into the pan. It did not have one on it when I took it apart but it may have from the factory.

Re: '69 396 dipstick tube mount

Everybody, thanks for the help. I straightened the tab and used an O-ring on the tube.
