Help me choose a radio please

Posted here instead of Audio for a lot more eyeballs, mods please don't move it -- thank you. The never-ending project just got bigger again. My old long-dead Pioneer failed to fire up on the left-rear speaker, so I'm looking for a simple, basic, affordable AM/FM that will run 2 front and 2 rear speakers. Dash is not cut btw. Been searching and Retrosound seems to have a pretty good reputation here on the board.....Custom Autosound, not so much. Right now I'm considering Retrosound Laguna, about $200. Any input is welcome.... good/bad or better choices available. Meantime, I'm headed back to search through more old threads.

Re: Help me choose a radio please

Good idea not to cut that dash

maybe some one else will help but I recall also there are vendors who can convert you factory radio to satallite radio. sparing the dash and maintaining a stock appearance

Re: Help me choose a radio please

No worries Mike, in 40 years I never had the urge to cut the dash. I will only consider radios that fit the stock dash and more-or-less look like they belong there.

Re: Help me choose a radio please

This one is somewhat pricey but has Bluetooth etc. and fits right into the dash.

Re: Help me choose a radio please

Hmmmm yeah that looks nice enough but is too spendy. I wouldn't know what to do with Bluetooth, just need the basics. Thanks anyway but I'll pass on that one.

Re: Help me choose a radio please

Out of curiousity I searched eBay for "Kenwood shaft radio" and got a few results. Some results also came up for "Old School Kenwood". I'm sure you can vary the search terms for Pioneer, Panasonic, JVC, etc. They're used, they don't have the vintage look of Retrosound stuff but they're a bunch cheaper too.

Re: Help me choose a radio please

The 2nd one down in the Crutchfield link, 068LAGUNAC, is the one I've been looking at, and it's not a budget-buster either. Good chance I'll end up with that.

I'm just a wee bit leery of used stuff, 'cause that's what I have now with the bad channel. It was ok until the wire to that speaker went bad (since replaced). I wonder if that's what made it fail. Kind of a moot point because the 8-pin connector only makes contact with side pressure applied.

Re: Help me choose a radio please

I have a Kenwood 2 knob in my 72. Bought it out of Crutchfield back in the mid 90s. Have Kenwood 921 amp hooked to it.

Re: Help me choose a radio please

My dash was cut i just went with a nicely optioned Kenwood.

On my 64 Impala, it still has the original radio, so i put a generic plastic stereo holder under the dash and have an alpine in there. Seems an acceptable way to do it in the Impala world.

If I had lots of $$, I would send the factory radio out to have the electronics upgraded with Bluetooth, USB input, up to date tuner and RCA outputs.

Re: Help me choose a radio please

Great choice!

For installation help, there are really good instructions provided in this thread:

Re: Help me choose a radio please

Thanks Goater! I'm hoping I won't need help but it's nice to know it's there. I have already replaced two bad speakers (and their wiring) and should have a new dual-cone dash speaker in a couple days. The old Pioneer radio I removed had all its wiring intact, will just need to connect those to the Retrosound. Piece-o-cake, I hope!
