Flipping it's top:)

Does anyone else flip the top of the air cleaner to get more air in the carb? Looking at the camper I posted on the CL thread the top of the air cleaner is flipped over, my dad used to do that on his/mine. Curious if anyone has ever done a dyno or really noticed any power increase or gas savings? I just restored the air cleaner and it looks so good, I almost hate to flip the cover over again.

Not gonna make much of any difference but we used to do it too back in the 70's just to get the BBBWWWAAAAAA sound when you floored it and got that old quadra jet to open up the vacuum secondaries and start sucking large amounts of air while down shifting the auto trans into passing gear ...BBBWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAA !!! and you could watch the gas gauge go down ...

I'm just sitting here thinking Da=n that was 40 something years ago ...

Ha ha.. I used to do that Not so much anymore because I know how much it cost to fix stuff and to replace tires... and I pay for my own gas now

I was a trooper back then and we did it to hear the BBBWAAA (quote from Grump) and have the dispatchers hear it. Seems we always talked on the radio when we were flooring it.

We'd take it in for service, mechanics would flip it back correct, we'd flip it back....repeat.

Ha, I took my truck in for an oil change, nothing else, but the tech decided he didn't like it flipped over and put it back the way it was supposed to be. Got it home and flipped it back over. Now that I have restored the outside of it and trying to get the engine compartment back to original I have it right side up. I know dad always had it flipped over, I may have to finish the inside so it looks as good upside down.. just not feeling it with it "right"

In the Oct 1977 issue of Popular Hot Rodding Technical editor Doug Marion was trying to get more mpg out of his 70 Monte Carlo and one of the things he did was flip the lid and got 1.5 more mpg's. I still have the magazine.

Two options I guess..

1. Paint up both sides so it looks good while flipped,

2. Buy a taller air filter to give a space while still having lid right side up.

Get a 5" tall k&n filter and flip the top upside down!

Well I can see what I am doing today, stripping the bottom side of the top and repainting it so it looks as good as the topside

BBWWWWWAAAAAAA - it is! You all convinced me and this is how dad always had it set up so I spend the morning with a brass wire wheel to get the bottom of the cover to look as good as the top. Looks like it was designed this way.



Finished the dash last night getting the stock AM/PB radio back in. UGH.. had to pretty much take everything out to get this in. Since I was already there I touched up the center vent.




It is getting there.. now to get all my side trim and paint done..
