PS install!
Well I finally have PS installed in my truck. Only one of the things I have wanted since I bought it about 6 years ago.
I used the steering box and pump from an 83 Chevy pickup that also had an inline 6 like mine. The truck was given to me for the motor since it ran good, but I first stole the PS from it. I ran into a few problems but finally got it running. First of all the inner fender was in the way so I had to "modify" it, then one hose was too short to reach, so I had to temporarily lengthen it with hose from another PS setup. After that was figured out I had to try and get a bracket installed in a way that I could tighten it all so the belt would spin it. I ended up using the same pulley that is also turning the ALT, but it makes enough contact to spin the ALT thank god. The bracket I used is mounted to the same bracket as the ALT is, but it works. Fired up the truck and a few little leaks since I didn't clamp the hoses that I lengthened ( which I figured would happen). I then tried to turn the wheel and the pump made a growling noise ( probably due to air), then it happened. The shower of fluid. I shut the truck off and figured it was the hoses I didn't clamp, so I clamped them all down nice and tight and fired the truck up again and it was still flowing. so I pushed the truck outside so I could have enough room to start the truck and run around to see where it was coming from. It was the extra piece of hose I put on that sprung a leak. So I cut out the bad section and clamped it down again. Toped up the fluid, told my Dad to stand WAY back since he came out to see how it was coming and all went well. I had to turn the wheel back and forth a few times to get the air out of the system, drove up and down the driveway and it was soooooo nice to have PS. Let it sit during super, toped it up again and it is still working. once I swap the engine for either that other inline 6 I have or a 350 then I will change the pump again and hope it mounts better. Sorry there are no pics but I didn't want to get my digital camera full of grease and oil, ( which it would have from that first oil bath) and it was about the freezing mark today so it would have been frozen by the time I was ready to snap some pics. NOW to change the steering column to a tilt column form a van that I picked up last year, or just change the wheel for now.
