Welcome to the truck board! What year is your truck? Is it 2 wheel drive or 4x4?

Re: Steering box

67 2WD base, gearbox is sloppy and the manual boxes don't seem to be plentiful

Re: Steering box

Thanks,
and thanks for the welcome. I've been immersed in turbo Buicks for 20 years, I'm trying something different for a while with this truck.

Re: Steering box

Have you tried to tighten it with the adjustment screw on the top of the box?
With a hex wrench and a 5/8 box end you can tighten if down to see if that is the issue

If you do try to adjust it do not adjust the set screw more than a quarter turn at a time and try it. If you tighten it up too much the steering may lock up when you turn a corner and you will not be able to straighten it back out. Years ago I went through a fence and almost hit a tree because I adjusted the set screw too tight. Just a heads up.....

Don't bother messing with the bolt, it is designed to adjust the gear mesh when new and it will not compensate for wear. The bolt holds the sector shaft mesh with the "other gear" the bolt "head" has a selective fit washer which combined with the head slides into a groove in the top of the sector shaft. Adjusting the bolt only tightens the gear mesh at the outer limit and when tightened allows the gear to engage too far which prevents the wheel from returning to center.

That being said the boxes are easy to rebuild if you can get parts, it will need seals, sector shaft bushings and the proper select fit washer. The box is essentially the same internally as corvette boxes from '63 to '82 so there should be parts available.

Re: Steering box

I just put a redhead quick ratio box in my '72. Very, very nice compared to the old slush box. Pricey, but very nice..
