What heads to go with?
I have been loosing a half gallon a water every30 miles in my 69 c10. It has been puffing white smoke and dripping water from my exhaust. I just finished pulling the heads off, looks like I have two Chambers cracked. The current heads are 882s.
If you were 8m my shoes, what aftermarket heads would you buy for a 350? I would like to put a summit k1103 cam in at the same time. |

Re: What heads to go with?
How about some Summit heads? But first you have to determine what chamber size you need to optimize compression ratio. That cam will like at least 9.5:1 to have any semblance of power at lower RPMs.
Is this a 350? Also, what is the axle ratio and tire height? A 214/224 cam is not going to like 2.56 or 2.73 gears. or even 3.08, assuming 28"-29" tires.

I'm sure I will change those gears out sometime. 355 or 373. Not sure which yet

Re: What heads to go with?
Are you approaching this from a cost or budget standpoint?...or full performance or?...money isn't too much of an issue?
How many miles are on the existing motor? Spending $1500 putting new aluminum heads and a cam (+ lifters + gaskets etc) on an older (possibly tired?) motor may have mixed results. For the same money you can probably get a new crate engine that will solve most of your problems and still offer better performance than what new heads and a cam might offer your existing motor. You can then take your time and rebuild your existing (original?) 350 at your leisure while still driving your truck. My two bits. Coley

Re: What heads to go with?
You should probably go to Summit's catalog and price some parts.

Re: What heads to go with?
Well, the cam is too much for that gear ratio and tire height. But if all you're looking for is a lopey idle, that cam should do it. The SUM-K1102 would work better.
As for your budget, here's a source for rebuilt heads. http://www.aeroheadracing.com/chevrolet-heads/ You may also have some engine & head rebuilders in your area. If your pistons are dished, you will want the 65cc combustion chambers to make decent cylinder pressure with a larger-than-stock cam. If they are flat top (as they probably were in 1970) the 76cc chambers are a better choice to fight pre-ignition. I'm with Coley. Don't put new parts in an old engine that may have other issues. You should at least do a compression test and make sure you have decent oil pressure when the engine is warm -- something like 15 PSI @ idle increasing to at least 40 PSI as you bring up the revs. You can buy a base Goodwrench engine for around $1500 at Jeg's, and put a SLIGHTLY larger cam in it, like SUM-K00032. That will make for a torquey engine with more punch than stock above 4000 RPM.
