popping out of 2nd gear

Hey all, Happy 4th of July!

im having a problem with my truck... its a manual saginaw three speed on the floor. i recently replaced the bushings in my aftermarket shifter .i think its the Mr Gasket one. the new bushings made the shifter feel nice and new... but it didnt resolve an issue i was hoping to fix...

it doesnt feel like its shifting into 2nd gear the right way... and many times its popping out of gear while in 2nd. when i go to push the shifter forward to get it back into 2nd gear, theres no travel at all and it feels like its barely doing anything. sometimes it does shift into 2nd normally and stays there and when it does, i can feel the shifter traveling the distance it needs to. any advice on whats going on?

Re: popping out of 2nd gear

have you adjusted the shifter carefully? usually drop the rods, lock the shifter in neutral with a rod or drill bit, then adjust the length of the rods so there no tension on them in neutral.

Is it a Hurst shifter?

Re: popping out of 2nd gear

I had a similar issue after I got mine on the road the first time, where it would jump out of 3rd when I was decelerating. It had the stock 3 speed with a Hurst Indy truck shifter on it behind a 261 inline 6. Got to the point where I had to hold onto the shifter to keep it from jumping out of gear.

I never did fix it, I parked my truck for a while due to the transmission issue which snowballed into my current Camaro Clip/Shortbox/327/700r4 and 4 link rebuild.

Re: popping out of 2nd gear

if not caused by shifter adjustment it's usually something to do with worn synchro rings/sliders/hubs. Likely it's just worn out.

Re: popping out of 2nd gear

popping out of gear or trouble engaging a gear is usually caused by worn or bent syncro teeth on the gears where the sliding hub ring engages. when you shift you are not moving the actual gears, you are moving a sliding hub that is splined on the inside and connects the "free spinning gear" on the mainshaft with a "pinned to the mainshaft" gear. if the trans was not shifted all the way into gear at some time or if it was shifted without the clutch all the way in or some other reason that may cause grinding, those little teeth can get slightly bent so the sliding ring wants to push away from the other gear when under load or decell. sometimes it is just caused by wear as well. either way the syncro usually needs replacement as well as the gear a lot of times.
suffice to say it is cheaper to find another trans in good shape or switch to an auto than have your trans rebuilt because the builder will have to warranty the thing so he will want new everything inside.

Re: popping out of 2nd gear

Not sure if you are able to due this due to location etc. Years ago I had the same problem but was still running the column shift linkage . Out here in Nebraska we have a lot of gravel and dirt roads . I was young and broke . So drove down a dirt road(level road) , shut the engine off while in second gear, blocked the wheels(important),crawled under the truck and disconnected the shifter linkage rods from the side of the arms on the side of the transmission(I noted the position of the arms of the tranny while in second gear) . I made sure the arms were fully engaged . I then crawled back out, unblocked the wheels and hopped in the truck . I had to slip the clutch because of the second gear start . Guess what . I could not get it to pop out of second gear . Ended up being a combination of poor adjustment and just about all of the linkage showed a lot of wear. Your transmission may be bad but this is what a broke 16 year old tried 45 years ago. Good luck .

Hey Frank,
You need a 3 speed sag, I got one. It's yours. Took it out of my 53 when I changed to a t5.
Was fine, in great shape. Doesn't leak. I'm about 1 1/2 away from you in NJ. Let me know if you want it.
