Grant Steering Wheel Cancel Cam Problems

I have a '71 GMC 4x4 with a tilt column. The problem is, when my Grant steering wheel is installed according to it's directions, it puts the canceling cam in the wrong position to work correctly. Anybody have this same problem?

Re: Grant Steering Wheel Cancel Cam Problems

I had the same issue. Trying to remember exactly what I did to fix it. I think it had something to do with disassembling the horn adapter and re-clocking it to put it in the correct position. Maybe a picture whuld stir my memory. It is fixable and mine works perfect now.

Re: Grant Steering Wheel Cancel Cam Problems

I would say fit the adapter to the column so the cancel cam is in the same clock position as the stock steering wheel.

this is what I did. I just had to take something apart and put back together differently to accomplish. i believe it had something to do with the horn connection

Re: Grant Steering Wheel Cancel Cam Problems

I have moved the adapter to the position it should be and it works great there but the problem is after doing that the steering wheel will be 90 degrees to the left, I will post pictures.

Drill a hole in the adapter to put the cam in the correct position, must be a wheel they didn't account for mounting correctly.

Or cut a slot in the adapter for the correct cam position

OK, Picture 1,2,3 are steering wheel, adapter and cam when positioned as per instructions (Cam in wrong position), picture 4,5,6 are steering wheel, adapter and cam when in right position to work correctly, but steering wheel is at 90 degrees with wheels straight.

Confirmed. Grant wheels are not clocked correct for chevy.

Re: Grant Steering Wheel Cancel Cam Problems

Funny I never noticed they were clocked wrong since I have removed dozens of grant wheels from Chevrolets over the years. I used to have stacks of them that I sold at swap meets. As soon as I get the car or truck home I install a gm wheel and sell the grant. When I was buying a lot of cars I would stock up on original steering wheels. I took the one off in the picture a couple weeks ago.

Re: Grant Steering Wheel Cancel Cam Problems

Just need the plastic canceling cam with the two cams at the 9 o'clock position, the metal horn piece comes off and can go back on. might try some epoxy.

Re: Grant Steering Wheel Cancel Cam Problems

If the 3 steering wheel mounting holes are evenly spaced you could just drill a new hole for the horn in the wheel right?

Re: Grant Steering Wheel Cancel Cam Problems

With the cam in the right position the screw holes don't line up, I was looking at doing that also but it won't work.

Re: Grant Steering Wheel Cancel Cam Problems

I had that same problem until I put the stock 17'' GM wheel back on. Also the stock wheel has never come off in my hand [in traffic] like a Grant wheel did once. It's funny when Laurel and Hardy or the 3 Stooges do it. Not so funny when you're not getting paid to be a stuntdriver.
Also my '71 Jimmy 4x4 handles a lot better with the stock wheel, and the horn works.

Re: Grant Steering Wheel Cancel Cam Problems

Just curious. If the front wheels are pointing forward does the flat on the steering box have any bearing on the location of the steering wheel, or maybe equal turns on the tie rod to center things up? Only a question, not a recommendation...
