How do you attach upper trim?

How do you attach the upper trim on a short bed? I haven't started it yet but I don't see how you can get the nuts on the back of the trim clips. No access and the bed has never ben drilled for the. Thanks Bill

I believe 69 & 70 used spring-metal snap-in clips to attach the upper bedside molding.

Sometime around 71 or so they changed to plastic clips stuck to the body with 3M (or similar) adhesive. I think they still used the snap-in metal clips at the very front & back ends of the molding though.

Thanks I did order my new molding and it comes with 3m adhesive strips. I guess I will wait until get them to check it out.

Heads up the LMC upper trim with adhesive clips doesn't stick. Mine started to fall off first 80 degree day.
Typical of everything I bought from LMC. garbage.
If it's not 3m VHB tape change it over before sticking.

Oh I was wrong I did order them from LMC. I got doors from Goodmark and some other things from Classic.
How are they other than the adhesive? I can put 3M double side tape on them.

These are the clips and stickers
From left to right
Lmc clip
Classic or maybe brothers clip
Lmc adhesive
Broken original clip

I never use the adehesive
It doesn't stick good and it holds the trim to far from body

Originally
Long beds had 4clips.
2 front 2 rear and 10 or 12 stickers

Short beds had 1 clip front and back and 8 stickers

Anytime I'm putting upper trim on
I string line between front and back hole
And drill 6 to 8 more holes matching original size
Equidistant between originals
And use ALL clips(just order more)
This guarantee's your trim will stay on
Even on original trucks where the stickers have failed
Usually the clips are still holding strong

Red truck is shortbed,first pic still shows broken original clip in hole
Ochre truck is longbed

I ended up pulling all my bed trim off.
Cut off the old tape and used a quality 3m tape.
So far no problems.
Clean bed of all wax along trim line first.
The trim itself is decent.
FYI for others. The lower body trim was LMC was a pain. The clips where too short and would spin when tightening the nut. The clip is supposed to be a bit longer so it cannot spin but rather lock in.
I retuned most of the items I got from LMC. it's just crap.

Thanks for the info I may buy new clips. I think I got it now most of the clips on the bed just push into place. The end ones have nuts.

I checked my 3m tape and was a touch loose.
Literally just drilled and installed the push in clips since I had them.
Use a little silicone caulk around the holes to keep from rusting. Water holds under that trim.

Thanks Eric for the tutorial on the different clips, saves me asking about this later. Have you made or found a tool to remove the OEM clips, or just 2 thin putty knives.? Does any body sell a box of 25 clips?

Try and get the black ones.
I like those better than lmc ones

For what it's worth, see post #1 at the following link. It lists what came with my NOS upper, lower & rears moldings. Includes some other info. that may make life easier. It's for a short bed. Can't say when the parts were manufactured.

(Even though it doesn't look like it)
