1970 C10 Suburban Trans Issue
Question, Driving home yesterday my burb was juddering as i take off and then would not shift into 3rd, then it would not find reverse and no matter where the column shifter is it pulls forward only,
anyone had this before? why does it only go forward if in reverse? is the linkage messed up or internal issue - i was in traffic it was struggling to pull away, like it was pulling a big load, I have noticed over the last month the shifter when it says D it isnt in D i have to move it to like 2 none of the shifter things line up anymore, so Park is like half an inch off the P , and R isnt where R is on the column more where P is, I am at a loss here as i do not know much about transmissions and i am in England and no one here knows them, so i have to ask for help, |

Re: 1970 C10 Suburban Trans Issue
It sounds like the direct clutch inside the transmission has failed. It is used in third and reverse.
I think it is time for a rebuild.

I don't know about the shifting problems but as far as the indicator not lining up, if not caused by any internal trans problem it would be the rod adjustment under the hood. Be sure and block your wheels before you start this. Open the hood and loosen the adjustment bolt at the top of the rod that connects the transmission and the shifter arm on the steering column, crawl under the truck and manually shift the transmission into Park. Hold it in Park while someone puts the shift lever in the park position up above, then tighten the adjuster bolt back up. This should correct your alignment problem. Below is a picture of the adjustment bolt. LockDoc

Re: 1970 C10 Suburban Trans Issue
Update
so it turned out to be this problem you see two phots pictures here, one is my trans, and the other is an example of what it should look like, there is a S spring that clips onto the Hedge Comb, this controls the flow of fluid and as mine came off the fluid was flowing no matter what, this could not move, the hedge comb was loose and should be torqued the nut to 30 neutrons, wasnt easy as only get a small wrench in there, and i got it tight as i can and a bit more, this then aligned up the shifter tooso all is well again, if you need anymore description, |

Thanks for the follow up. Glad it wasn't something major. LockDoc
