Re: '77 Camper Special
I haven't posted in a while but a lot has been going on. After spending a year reading up and buying parts, I finally pulled the trigger on doing a cummins 4BT swap. I will post pix this week.
I could have done a Cummins swap in about 5 different ways, In the end I bought an engine out of a Fedex truck. It adapts directly to a Muncie 4 speed. I put in a Ranger OD. She drives pretty good! Super narrow power band so I am glad to have the OD. She has a ton of leg and it cruises really well on the highway. It is loud and i have to do something about that eventually, but it is fun to drive. I have to admit I miss the V8 sound but so far I am liking it

Right now mileage is about 20 total. I am going to keep driving it a couple more tanks and give a solid number. I am just going on little hops and shaking out coolant and fuel leaks.

Re: '77 Camper Special
I got it from a guy on eBay actually! I looked and looked and finally just pulled the trigger. This thing is pretty cool because it mates direct to the muncie. And it came with everything. Me and my buddy just added fuel and it fired right up. There's a lot to be said for that

Re: '77 Camper Special
There was a lot of little things that I had to do that didn't think about before hand. Turns out the bell house adaptor tilts the whole shebang about 10 degrees counter clockwise when viewed from the front. This isn't a big deal for the engine, but we wound up with a rotated trans when we were done. Messy. Also swapped the fuel delivery to the driver side. Also re-geared the axles to a small ratio to keep highway rpm down. So many other things, which escape me now

Re: '77 Camper Special
I am pretty happy with it, so far. I just have to shift more often. I will say the diesel sound when she sits there is pretty cool and people notice. I should say dudes notice.
Other than that, I probably wouldn't do the gear splitter again, I could have laid out a NV4500 for about the same $$ and had a cleaner setup with one less link in the chain to fail. Plus no kooky rotation issue. With the 3.54 gears and OD, I can do 75mph easy. But a lifted relic like mine is not fun at 75. It does jump off the line. Not kidding. It is un-stallable, and I haven't tried to use the granny gear yet. I will say, I like the VE 4 cylinder. You can dial them up pretty easy and they are cheaper because guys want the P pump. I will dyno mine, but I have turned up fuel and bigger injectors. And it is so simple! One wire to the fuel shutoff, one to the starter, and you are on your way! And it leaves lots of room in the engine compartment. I dig that. I will probably try an intercooler next year.
