I used to take my '72 C10-1/2ton camping with an 8 ft. camper on the back.
That was a lot of load for it, but I prepared the truck very well for the trips including: good brakes, tires & air pressure, cooling, transmission coolers, steering, etc.
I never had any problems other than just having to bide my time given the decreased performance of the truck.

These trucks...certainly the 3/4 tons can take most campers safely on a trip if the truck is in good, prepared condition.

As for worrying about the public at large and their driving habits...this is not time well spent because it is not something you can control in my opinion.
