Re: Blood and sweat, what injury has your truck caused lately?

[QUOTE=gigamanx;7996209]Isn't there the possibility of hair in any spinning, moving parts? . [/QUOTE

Back when my dad worked at Boeings they were always stressing safety and being careful around equipment with long hair. Some gal got her long hair hung up in a drill press and had a chunk of it pulled out and a guy who worked with my dad who had a big afro saw it and lost his cookies but came to work the next day with a fresh and much shorter doo.

Had a kid in one of my shop classes years ago that had long hair (native American) who got his hair tangled up in a creeper wheel. That happened twice and he came in with much shorter hair. My son wore his hair real long for years until he started working as a mechanic in a slaughter house and then it got short. He is a maintenance supervisor there now and is hell on wheels on safety.

Those stupid running board supports on my 52 are great shin bangers.

Rings...
I grew up on a farm in eastern Iowa and I can tell you that at least 10 of my friends dads (farmers) would NOT wear their wedding rings..."I love my wife but I love my fingers too!" was what my best friend's dad would say. Now my dad's best friend wasn't so lucky...for some reason decided to reach into a grinder mixer one day to clear up a clog and lost his index, middle and ring finger off his right hand, and as a smoker had to figure out to hold a cigarette between his thumb and pinky. I remember as a kid him pointing that out repeatedly...

regarding Charlotte...I remember welding one day, wearing a heavy cotton shirt to protect my arms and starting to feel a tingle in my left forearm. Looking down, I observed that I was on fire and the tingle was that what i was feeling as a piece of slag was melting into my skin...yeah! It was actually pretty minor but now i had to find a new welding shirt. And hear you about the running board supports, that's left a couple of nice bruises on the shins

Re: Blood and sweat, what injury has your truck caused lately?

Keep cutting my calf, drawing blood, on a leaf spring every time I climb out from under my truck - you would think I would grind it smooth or get out some where else - but no. Have a series of scars in the same place to prove my stubbornness...

I keep this photo as my "work safely" inspiration. Just today I installed a new cutting disc and made sure I spun it up to speed away from my face before actually using it.

One thing that rips my heart out is seeing people destroying their bodies at work, not like that, though a guy who worked right next to me left to go to another shop where he was killed about three weeks later with a car falling on his head because of HIS personal broken jack!

But to see guys sanding without protection, grinding without safety glasses, respirator, ear protection, nothing it kills me!

I had a picture up on the wall in the shop of a guys (who is a regular here but will remain nameless unless he sees this and wants to respond) stint in his chest where he had to give himself a steroid shot every morning. He posted didn't want to post this photo but did because of the importance and to REALLY show what can happen by not wearing protection. He was welding a rad support in a honda over in a corner of the shop where there was poor air movement. He was breathing ZINK because that is what is coating all late model cars metal! They are galvanized with ZINK. He damaged his lungs and had to leave this trade to just to not get worse. The good news is this has made a big difference and he is going on with life. The sad part is some jerk who didn't like seeing the TRUTH in this photo took it down and threw it away.

PROTECT YOURSELF!

Where I've started noticing it, oddly enough, is all those car shows on TV where they build hotrods in 30 minutes. No respirators, poor eye protection, guy holding his hand over his eyes instead of throwing a welding mask on. I feel like those guys have some responsibility in showing us DIYers the right way to do everything involved in working with cars.

Re: Blood and sweat, what injury has your truck caused lately?

I was one of those guys when I was younger - but after a couple close calls I have a whole drawer in my toolbox dedicated to safety gear. I still have an issue with welding in shorts and have had a couple "sun" burns... but am working on that.

I have seen that also in the builder shows - I have a tendency to holler at the TV when they are wrong...

Re: Blood and sweat, what injury has your truck caused lately?

Just getting over having another Cornea replaced (again). The first one (right ) ws a breeze. They botched the job on the left and now its fixed. (They tell me i'm a Agent Orange victim BTW.) Being partially blind for even a week or two sure puts the fear of god in you when it comes to eye protection. My restorer guy a fleck of metal off a grinder in his eye. Uninsured, it cost him about $500. Makes a cheap pair of glasses seem very cost effective.
