Who makes this tire machine?

Gentlemen,

I bought an old pneumatic tire machine this week, but can't find a make or model anywhere. I think it is missing the outside cover, but I figured the brand would be marked somewhere else.

The machine is complete mechanically and the only thing it needs it a new ram seal. I was hoping to find the make and model so I could come up with some schematics.

I thought it was a cool shop piece and couldn't pass it up for $20

Looks like an old Coates machine to me. Maybe an early 20-20 model? The later ones were rectangles instead of round but the mechanisms look the same.

vines ,cotes (coats, coates),and bishman keep coming up when searching antique tire changers in google images...my dad has one that's older than yours I believe

I'm guessing Coats since it looks like it was red. Could have been painted I guess, but either way I would not have passed it up for $20.

Thanks for the replies! I thought it could be a coats at first, but couldn't find any models that looked the same. I think it looks pretty close to a Hunter TC3500. I need to redo the ram seal and it will be good to go.

I had to wait to check on my machine. I have a Henderson by Big 4 Industries. The pneumatic portion on mine is only for the bead breaker. Unfortunately I don't really see any similarities. Photos are attached.

You are correct. I just found out the tire changer is a Big 4, manufactured by Studebaker. Still not sure of the model because I can't find any online with the same base. I think I will have a piston seal made and get the machine working. Hopefully I can get it up and running soon.

I wonder if the base has been altered. Look at this one:





The square plate in the center of yours looks exactly the same as the center of the one above. And the pedals are visible at the bottom of the square plate. The round base plus angle iron uprights on yours could have been added to make the machine higher.

That still doesn't help with the model but at least you may have more pictures.

I may have an instruction manual for mine, which could provide an approximate year of manufacture. I'll try to check tomorrow.

I wonder if that added framework setup was to raise it up a bit for a taller operator who got tired of bending over. I bought a stand with a vise on one end and a bench grinder on he other that was about eight inches taller than I could use and figured that the original owner was really tall. Top of the vise is about where the top of the angle iron used to be now.
