overheating rat rod
purchased a 1969 c-10 with a 454 motor.engine is a stock rebuild with header's.It has been hot here in southern ,north carolina for past 3 month's.Truck is overheating,I flushed radiator and installed new thermostat. Water pump is O.K.and still overheating.I want to get a new radiator and would like advice,2,3,4, Row,aluminum or steel,what brand.Help would be greatly appreciated. Thank's Ron

4 row aluminum is what I would recommend. As far as makers, I don't have a perferance. But I would make sure it came with a shroud and electric fan set up. I think champion and griffin brands offer that option.

Do you have a coolant recovery bottle on your rad? |

First off, welcome to the forums.
Some pics of your setup might help. You may not need a new rad. Currently 2 or 3 row radiator? Fan shroud? Fan type? Engine state of tune? Retarded ignition timing causes an engine to run hotter. Just food for thought.

Lots of good advice on this forum and congrats on your truck .... i have a 454 in my truck as well .. and it Over heats too ... when I'm cruising/moving it's fine .... haven't really gotten to fully address it yet cause I don't drive truck that much and work a lot ... I have an alum rad and new water pump just haven't put them in ... anyways .... (good advice Iv gotten here) what I have done is move my temp sensor from next to the header over to where the water pump is for a more accurate reading .... and Iv put my fans on a manual switch . I also have a 454 in mine, but I want to ask you a few questions. Overheating means to me fluid puking out, but it means other things to look at, is it in fact puking fluids? What temperature does the engine get up to? You can get for a few bucks a laser temperature gun and you will then know the accurate temperature your engine is getting up to. I'm running a 2 core, 1 1/2" tubes - aluminum radiator and an electric fan with an adjustable unit to come on about 170 degrees, and it runs fine. More tubes depending upon the sizes could mean a much wider radiator, do you have that kind of room and or it could mean much smaller tubes than say 2 or 3. Are you running a 50/50 mix?? Number of tubes doesn't necessarily correct an overheating issue. Others have also mentioned factors you need to look into if you already haven't.

No, I don't have a recovery bottle yet I planned to buy a 32 oz. when I purchase the radiator. I installed an automatic choke, adjusted carb., added new 180 thermostat and flushed radiator and new 16 lb. radiator cap. Ron

Do you have a shroud? Having one is necessary for your cooling system to function properly.

at what temperature is it running? Does it cool down as you drive, but heat up at stoplights?

Then it's likely not overheating. It's just puking out fluid until it finds the right level in the rad for normal expansion. That level is normally 3 inches below the top when cold. If you keep filling it to the top it'll keep puking it out.

You didn't say what you have currently for a cooling system. My 2wd. Blazer has a mild 454 w/A.C., & headers. Has a Performer RPM intake on it. I have a stock 4 core rad. with a shroud and a G.M. 7 blade clutch fan. I have a 160* thermostat. It runs 160 - 180 normally. It'll get to 200 deg. if it idles 600 RPM for a long time on a 90 deg. Florida day. It won't blow coolant out the overflow.... no catch tank. If I bring the RPM up to 1,000rpm the temp. will start back down.

You also didn't say if it was getting hot idling or if it was while driving. Both require different possible solutions.
