UHaul Auto Trailer Transport - LWB Fits Fine

I looked around quite a bit online and only found a couple of pics of C10s on a UHaul auto transport trailer so I figured I would post a more thorough report for those needing to haul their LWB truck in the future.

My GMC C25 fit just fine and the trailer towed very well to a car show last weekend. I drive trucks for UHaul part-time in the winter to stay busy. Don't believe what most folks say--UHaul does an impeccable job of maintenance from my experience in the repair shop in between my runs. Most stories you hear are of renters abusing the equipment. Their auto trailers are especially stout.

My wheelbase is 127" and the trailer deck is 133". You will want the 7K (2,100-lb empty trailer weight) or 7.5K trailer but their system will automatically select that for you based on wheelbase and truck weight.

The only problem I had was using the tire web straps up front. I knew they would not fit and had already bought my own straps to tie into those on the trailer. My tires are 235/85-16 for reference. Not a huge deal if you own some auto straps. You can see in my third picture a close-up of their tire webbing and how I tied into it. I attached the built-in front and rear safety chains and also used two axle traps out back. Towed very well. I would not hesitate to pull one across country.

Any ways, just thought I would share my experience to make things easier for somebody looking for this answer down the road.

Take care,

Mark

Re: UHaul Auto Trailer Transport - LWB Fits Fine

I just did the same thing. I went to pick up a trailer (converted from a 72' Longhorn) and found I couldn't get the straps around the tires. The only solution I had was to let air out of the tires until I could get the strap to start in the tightening mechanism.
It ended up being fine, but it could have been a wasted trip if the tires were much bigger.
I told U- Haul they should offer longer straps for situations like that. We'll see if they listen.

Very nice truck, BTW!

I suggested the same thing. Yep, letting air out is very common practice on those trailers. Glad it worked out for you.

Re: UHaul Auto Trailer Transport - LWB Fits Fine

This is exactly what I was looking for! I purchased a 71 Longhorn over the weekend and am looking at renting a Uhaul trailer to go get it next weekend. Since it has the 133" wheelbase, it sounds like it will just BARELY fit. I'll make sure and throw in some extra straps for the wheel ties as well!

New-to-me trucks always make me nervous to drive long distances until I have a chance to go over everything... It runs great, but I'd rather have the trailer to be on the safe side!

Re: UHaul Auto Trailer Transport - LWB Fits Fine

FYI, technically a Longhorn will "fit" on the longer 148" Uhaul car hauler. When their specs say they'll fit up to a 133" wheelbase, they aren't kidding around! We also learned the hard way that regardless of the Uhaul guy's insistence that he needed to hook the trailer up for us, we really should have used some common sense and checked everything again. He failed the thread the locking mechanism down that secures it to the ball. It rode three hours down just fine, but as soon as I started pulling the truck onto the trailer it rose up and pushed into my buddy's tailgate. F-bombs ensued. On the plus side, once we pulled our heads out of our collective butts and ensured it was attached properly like we should have to begin with, everything went as smoothly as can be. These trailers pull great with a load on them. The brakes don't work terrific without a load on, but with the truck on they work really well.

Had the same experience with these trailers when it comes to them trying to hook it up. We rented one and the girl who came to hook it up had no clue what she was doing but insisted she had been shown how. We explained well you're doing it wrong and it's our necks on the line if things go bad.

Do you guys actually tell them what you're putting on the trailer? Just wondering because I've been denied rental when I said what vehicle was going on the trailer and wondered if insurance would cover loss if I lied.

I've pulled 2 different 72 K/20s on them and you can't tell them what your doing or they will not rent it out. I found that an extended cab long bed mid 80s ranger has the same wheel base as a long bed K/20 and they will rent you a trailer for a ranger. so that's he vehicle I used when I rented.

I actually did tell them exactly what I was hauling. They did say that for something that size we had to use at least a 3/4 ton, but didn't give me any grief at all.

My experience with UHaul was one of very poor service, organization and full of mechanical issues on multiple trucks. The trailer, however, was great (minus a leaky tire after I got it). More details about mechanical issues and pulling teeth with Uhaul to get them replace out truck: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...2&postcount=54

Shorty fits, obviously .

I actually read your moving story just a few days ago! I LOVE your truck. Cheyennes look so good in dark olive. The trailer is actually one of the nicer ones I've used. I'd use one again in a heartbeat. Just have to cover my butt on the attachment next time...

Is this new for UHaul? Maybe 10 years ago I wanted to rent a trailer and they had nothing. Just those little dollies that go under the front wheels.

Or maybe it's regional? It'd be nice if they rented trailers here (Seattle Eastside) though!

Re: UHaul Auto Trailer Transport - LWB Fits Fine

I have hauled vehicles across country several times. The easiest pull was from Jacksonville FL to Dallas with my sisters Toyota. The most pain in the a@@ pull was my '70 GMC lwb from Memphis to Dallas. I couldn't get over about 45 mph, but I was using a half ton Tahoe to pull it.

I couldn't get my 69 K10 to fit on the uhaul, I had just towed it 350 miles to find out the hard way, 31 10.5 15s were too wide to get on the trailer. Oh well, it was running good enough to drive it home. More fun anyway.

Re: UHaul Auto Trailer Transport - LWB Fits Fine

I've had a lot of jobs, and one was at a U-haul center. You had to be on top of things to run the counter, the yard and shop. I was an assistant and acting manager. Go figure as acting manager we won the district's "5 Star Award" for the first time. Think that would put me into position for permanent? Nope. Don't know how much of their policy has changed since 1990, but they pretty well ripped off their employees from wages to bonuses. I lost the best help you'll ever find, simply because they wouldn't pay the guy a lousy $8 an hour. He was manager material himself. Perhaps just a bad district. I liked the job though and cool experiences. Parnell Roberts used to come in just to chat. They had a mountain of a man working for them. 7'7" tall, 500 plus pounds but not much in the way of fat. The dude's hands were the size of a large head, and doorways, never mind the height, his shoulders were too wide. A gentle giant and I'll never forget him. His brother was 5'7".

On a side, that sounds like a good winter job HA!. I retired in January, and the project won't keep me busy through this winter.

Re: UHaul Auto Trailer Transport - LWB Fits Fine

remember to only drive 55mph, its not just a recommendation from the trailer rentl guys but in many states its the law

and have as much insurance as is possible

and make sure your rental agreement and the actual intended use are the same. if you overloaded a trailer in violation of DOT and or the trailer rental agreement/contract and you have an accident you could be %*^# out of luck.

and watch those tire ratings too. I have seen people get ticketed for having the wrong rating on tires used in the tow vehicle, and it was not involved in an accident either.but if it is in an accident it could leave you out in the cold too in terms of insurance coverage.
