Widest tire to fit in a stepside fender
Hey y'all, I'm curious to what is the widest tire meaning largest tread width tire you can fit inside a stepside fender? It'll be on a stock rear end and the fender is already cut cause of bad backspacing on current wheels.
I may just be missing a stepside thread about tires and all, and if so just post it please. Otherwise lemme know, and pics always appreciated |

No spacers, just a quick BS measurement and a whole lot of hoping they fit

That looks good! You same tire and everything all around? Thinking bout going big and little and trying to determine how big I can go in the rear. Thanks for the response!

Yep, factory 12 bolt with a 5 lug conversion and that's it.
No sweat, I am running the same tire/wheel setup on all 4 corners. 18x9 Rev 107s with 275/40r18s |

Re: Widest tire to fit in a stepside fender
I have 275's and they are rubbing like crazy. 5 inch rear drop and stock axle. They rub on both sides of both tires. I had rolled the fender but when it got painted he unrolled it. They used to have clearance on the inside of the tire next to the bed but some how that is not true after they put the bed back on. It is strange what works for some people does not work for others. If you are planning on getting a really large tire in the rear and rolling the fender be warned that the brackets that hold the inner support bars will not roll. I still can't figure out how scoot_mcgrute can have a 7 inch drop and not bottom out.

Every time scoot_mcgrute posts a pic of that truck it brings back memories of when I was a staff car driver/messenger for the Army in about 1970. Not all good memories- a mixed bag.
I think there's supposed to be a small stencil that says "TMP 35(or whatever motor pool it came from)" above the front wheelwell.

Re: Widest tire to fit in a stepside fender
I have about 3/4" uptravel in the rear and hit the frame regularly, need to c-notch it this winter. I actually can't drive it to work right now because they have some massive bumps on the highway due to re-paving. Thought I was going to end up jumping my 3500 Dodge off one yesterday

all I can say is be careful when buying your tires based on what everyone on here says. Not all trucks have the same spacing.

Re: Widest tire to fit in a stepside fender
Also the tire you choose can have an effect on if it will fit. They all have different section widths. When I put new tires on the back of the 66 I went with the same size tire and changed brands. The new tires have a wider section width on the rims than the old ones. Needless to say the new ones rub just a bit on the inside when pulling into parking lots. The white letters are facing in and they are getting rubbed off. Will be a bit of trial and error and you may find a combo that wont fit.

325/50/15 Close to as wide as you can fit under a stock width 12bolt. Yes they fit under the fenders.
