I like white lithium grease myself or silicone lubricant.

Graphite powder for door locks, [also house locks]. Does not attract dirt/sand which could jam the works. Aerosol white lithium is OK for hood hinges, except it's white and the hinges are black. I've also used regular ol' WD40 on the hinges without ill effects.
And the only stupid question is the one you're afraid to ask.

Guys, about graphite in door locks: I have no knowledge or experience but Leon (LockDoc) has plenty of both. Here's his take on it:

I know part of the problem is that people get really carried away with it though. It's the old adage that if a little is good a lot must be better.... If a spray lube with Teflon is used there is no oil to attract dust and dirt. Any lock will have a buildup of contaminants if they are not flushed once in a while with a good penetrating oil. I never recommend Graphite for any lock cylinder.

A bunch of fantastic info, thank you all! I have white lithium grease in a spray can for the hinges, and I have Tri-Flow with Teflon for the door locks! I'll go do it in an hour or so, just in case someone breaks into the conversation in the nick of time with a dire warning about either product.

Interesting. This quote is from another thread? [Not sure how to do that trick myself.] LockDoc is a pro, so his opinion has some weight on this subject. I wonder why they sell that graphite powder?
We don't usually have a lot of humidity in Arizona. But I did have some difficulty entering the key into my front door lock during the recent monsoon season... Perhaps a related issue? I wanted to give it another shot of graphite, but couldn't find the tube. Now that the summer rains here are mostly over, the problem went away. I'll have to get some more Break Free.

I like Tri-Flo. White lithium is great on hinges and it lasts because it's a grease. Oils, silicones, etc. require more often application. And cleaning/flushing is important for any product that clings.

A few drops of motor oil on the hood hinges. I don't like the residue the white spray grease leaves.

For the hood hinges, i have been using marine grease and PB blaster. Marine grease applied with brush (flux) and PB blaster to get it in the crevasses.

Crap! I've been using butter!

Haven't lubed anything yet, hopefully soon. I have lots of lubes as I used to sell for ZEP Inc.

X2 for Tri-Flow. Use it on everything from mountain bikes to AR-15's.

Re: Sorry, Stupid Question: Best Lubricant For Hood Hinges? How About For Door Locks?

Back when my daily driver was a 1980 K20 I used WD-40 monthly to prevent the dreaded
Kinked hood on the square bodies. I got a can of Triflow and decided to give it a try,
It lubed so much better than WD-40 the hood would not stay more than half way open!!!!
No kinked hood, but it was about 1 1/2 years after even cleaning the hinges with brake cleaner before the hood would stay open!!!
All the best, Dirk

Yep. Post #6 in this thread http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...28#post7568928

This is the first time I tried it, and it's easy. Just do what you would to quote the post, then copy that quote and paste it into your new reply.
