68 GMC C2500 wheel hub
Can someone tell me the purpose of the large rear wheel hubs on the '68 3/4 ton truck?

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong.
But I believe they are a fully floating design. Which means if you snap an axle the wheel and hub stay attached to the diff. Just a bit safer with a heavy load.

Full floating axles are stronger because the axle just has to handle the rotational load. The wheels and hubs are supported by a spindle on the end of the axle tube. Semi floating axles have to support the weight of the vehicle and the rotational force.
You don't want a wheel /hub leaving the truck with a cord of wood in the back. |

What is facing you is the axle flange. You can unbolt that, slide it out, and the truck still rolls. It's a truck rear, not a slightly beefier car rear. By the late-70s started playing around with building heavier 1/2Ts and lighter 3/4Ts, so you'll see the 8-lug trucks with semi-floating rears that don't have the outer hub. That might be why you are asking this question. You have a real 3/4t.

Just like everyone above have said, this is the full float rear end axle hub. Another important point is it has two large bearings that support each hub, compared to one bearing on each side of a half-ton axle.

Thanks. It's become my favorite "old" vehicle. It spent most of its life in CA with a camper on it. Much of the paint and the interior is original. I was looking for an older truck but when I found it 4 years ago with the 396 and granny 4 speed I couldn't resist.

Two classics, '68 GMC C2500 and Perception Kayak. They've been in the game a long time. Truck looks great and I dig the 8" wheels. I have the same wheels open with chrome lug nuts as well. Mine hauls kayaks and works spring through fall as well.
