Rear ended question

I currently have a posi 3.25 rear ended. My carrier can hold up to a 3.42. Do I put a 4.42 or get a posi carrier and 3.73 gears?

Re: Rear ended question

I have to assume you meant to say 3.42 and not 4.42...?

3.25 to 3.42 to me is not enough change to validate effort and expense...

Depends on what use the truck is going to get...highway hauler...stick with what you have....

Drag racing??? Start at 3.73 or maybe 4.11...

How tall are your rear tires?

Re: Rear ended question

3.25??

Concur with Aussie, not worth it to go from 3.25 to 3.42 (for any use, in my opinion). That alone won't make for much of a noticeable change. Having said that - if you have a 700R4, it IS worth changing to a 3.73 (there's a reason that was the stock ratio on later factory-equipped OD trans trucks. It's the best compromise with the deep 700R4 1st gear and the OD 4th gear - provides bottom end torque and most efficient cruising rpm for most circumstances. If you do have a desire to go 90 mph on the highway, then stick with what you have (but keep in mind that cruising at 60 won't make you or your engine very happy) - or if drag racing, go to a 4.10 or deeper, assuming the trans is beefed up. Anyway, there you go. Expert advice for free! Well, maybe someone else can provide that - but you DO now have my opinion

Re: Rear ended question

Yeah I meant 3.42. Damn fingers hit the 4 on my phone. I don't drag race, but I like to have fun with it. Interstate driving I average 80mph and I get 14mpg haven't been able to check it in the highway. I really want a quicker takeoff but do I spend the $200 for 3.42 or spend the $550 for 3.73. Oh yeah I have 265/70/15 which I hate because they are soo wide and wonder on Crown Road which we have a lot of. Ill probably go with 235/75/15. Unless I find some 17's or 18's but will match the tire size from the 235/75/15

Re: Rear ended question

Is this a coil spring truck or a leaf spring truck...?

Crown wander is usually a mix of soft or worn out track bar bushes / trailing arm bushes...or worn out front end and alignment issues...

Has this truck been lowered?
If yes...how much and what combination of parts?

Re: Rear ended question

I have Coil springs. The crown on the road when I first leave where I live is so bad, but is soon as I hit the county line it drives perfectly straight the front end has all new bushings ball joints and tierods and has been aligned. The truck is stock height

Re: Rear ended question

If you have a series3 carrier you can get "thick" ring gears up to, I think, 4.56. No need to change your carrier.
