Upgrade To HEI

1974 C10 350/TH350. Decided I want to upgrade to HEI from stock distributor. Have seen a lot of brands available. The 1972 C10 I had previously owned had Accel when I purchased it. Looking at Accel 5048R 65K HEI DISTRIBUTOR. Would like to get opinions on this one and/or different ones that would be good. Engine is stock.

TIA

Re: Upgrade To HEI

I have upgraded my '76 to an Accel HEI I had laying around from my brother's small block set up on his '71. I don't know the part number, but I can say my Accel really improved the way the truck ran and responded to tuning. Then again, my stock unit was trashed beyond belief. I say go for it.

Accel 5048r is coming up as plug wires for me?

Accel 59107 is coming up as the drop in HEI

I can't comment on the Accel unit, but I have the summit HEI, 850001, only cost $90 and had zero issues with it in the roughly 16-18 months we used it

Sorry, used wrong number. Should be HEI000R.

Re: Upgrade To HEI

that number doesn't come back as an accel. but an "A Team" from amazon.

I would be leery of an off brand HEI from amazon.

I have heard that the best HEI is the original ac delco stuff. I took a chance on the summit one because I was troubleshooting issues and it was cheap. it did turn out to be ok though.

Re: Upgrade To HEI

I would proceed with caution with anything from Skip White. I have no experience with him, but I have read horror stories about some of the engines he sold on Ebay( doesn't take much googled to find all the bad press)

he is famous for using knock off Chinese junk.

for something as vital to the operation of the engine as the distributor i would not cheap out.

Re: Upgrade To HEI

Consider a Pertronix points conversion and use your original distributor. Other than that, I have a Skip White dizzy in my 71 C20. No problems over the four years it has been in there.

So, if i go with Pertronix points conversion, existing older coil still to be used as it is now? I'm not up on a lot of upgrades or conversions.

Re: Upgrade To HEI

Yes. Or use a more powerful coil. It only replaces the points. Everything else is the same.

Re: Upgrade To HEI

I think all the aftermarket distributors are chinese. It's just a matter of how much you want to spend for one. Might as well buy the cheapest. I read all the bad press on skip white but I had no problems. My skip white distributors have been to several states. I think they are all over 5 years old now. Just sayin' they aren't as bad as everyone thinks.
