Re: I always wanted a sweet old truck
little update
drilled the hole and put in a longer bar. then plated it with some 1/4 plate. drilled through that too and welded it all together. I also plated up the rest of that section of frame. and tied the bars up top together. and put some gussets on the mount. Ive still got a bit more to do. Havent don't the bottom of the gussets. both sides are mostly done. I ran out of welding wire the other night. Still need to remake the lower arms and do a bunch of other stuff. finish primer and painting the frame too. |

Re: I always wanted a sweet old truck
Thanks Bomp! welcome aboard.
Did a bit more yesterday. I forgot to drill holes for the wiring to go through the cnotch when I did them. THIS IS SOMETHING YOU DO NOT WANT TO FORGET TO DO! painstakingly had to drill holes to try and fix that. This is the best I could come up with using the tools I own. Hole saw, Reciprocating saw, angle grinder, and a series of files later. Then I made some gussets to cover the holes. they are made out of 3/8" plate.(Its a lot closer to 1/4" but they claim its 3/8") I did some relief cuts in the back then bent it. welded the back where the cuts were made to try and give it more strength. I also welded in the rivets to give it a more stylized look. Did the other side to match. Then I had these plates I cut for another project that ended up not being the right size. so I used them as more gusseting. These aren't cleaned up all the way. just a quick wire brush to get the fluxcore burn off. Ill clean them better before paint. |

Re: I always wanted a sweet old truck
What Airbags are people normally using on the rear of their trucks? I have some d2600 for it but have heard they are a big stiff bag for use with no weight in the bed. I am thinking about running a dual set of bags. One set over the axle for when I am towing or have a lot of weight in the bed. the other where the bracket is now with a smaller bag for cruising or whatever. Has anyone ever done this? is it a dumb idea? I usually tow a 1200lb trailer with a 4000lb car on it.

Re: I always wanted a sweet old truck
I made this trailer hitch thing. not the greatest pics. but you get the idea.
started boxing it in decided to not weld in the end caps so I can use the holes on top to mount the bed. Not a ton of progress. but its something. |

Re: I always wanted a sweet old truck
I had to replace the engine in my daily so that took me away from this for a bit. Ive been trying to get back to it. I unhooked the axle and everything from the frame and pulled it out to turn it around so I can clean up the rear for paint. the front is just primer. I will probably clean that up and reprimer before painting the whole thing.
this thing is heavy. Ive been using a wire wheel on my angle grinder to clean it up a bit, ended up burning the angle grinder up. Ive been beating on it for a few months now so it was about time. Cheap harbor freight angle grinder, I get them for $6 every six months with their warranty. Had a new one sitting in a box as backup. threw the wire wheel on it and within 30 seconds it was too hot to hold with my leather gloves. I think it is just faulty. I am not putting that much load on it. starting to clean up nicely. really should just get a nice welder and stop messing around with junk. Once I get the frame painted I can start putting the truck back together. Hopefully real soon. I could use the space the pieces of the truck are taking up. |
