Re: Looking For A Radiator

I've been using a champion aluminum radiator in my 72 for over a year now, works great. Just picked up a second one for my 68 as it sprung a leak the other day. Fixing a 40+ year old radiator is a game, it's only a matter of time before it leaks again.

Hey 1SG Rob. I have had Allen's Radiator repair or rebuild several radiators and the heater core for my 51 GMC and all of them have worked great. They are semi local to you in downtown Portland just off the 405. They have always been honest about if it is worth fixing or getting a new one.

Re: Looking For A Radiator

Well I removed both lower radiator retainer brackets and for the moment have 4-row replacements from GMC Paul's in there. I can remove those if I want and go back with my newly painted originals or some NOS 4 row's that I have coming. I have decided to go with my KKS all aluminum radiator for now.

My future plans are to get my original radiator recored and maybe put that in there if need be. The ability to remove and replace the lower radiator support brackets is a game changer of sorts. I think I will try and buy an OEM 4 row radiator or two for saving....getting those recored when I can to have for the future.

My radiator and cooling works great and I just tested it in 110 degree heat for over 100 miles with great results. Water temp was rock solid at 202 degrees at 75mph. Also, the system now has 11k miles on it. I'm using Engineering Cooling Products radiator and they are around $219 and are direct drop-ins. Good stuff!

Re: Looking For A Radiator

I ended up replacing my old radiator instead of repairing it. I went with a stock replacement and got it from Wes up at Classic Heartbeat for $370. Quick install and is working great. I still have the stock one, not sure what I will do with it.

Can you comment on how your ECP radiator has held up through he summer? Is it still doing a good job as you reported in June?

When you say " is a direct drop in" as you were dropping in where a 4 row originally was or did you have an original 2 row??

I found them and like the fact that its full 1" cooling tubes, fully welded and mimics the looks of the original with the stamped tanks....would probably disguise well with a shot of black paint. Looking to swap in where a 2 row was.

thanks!

The ECP is doing just fine. I now have a little over 12k miles on it and 3 summers here in "HOT" West Texas. It should just drop in. I'm using factory style top clamps. It probably would blend in if you painted it black. On a factory type restoration I probably would have done that. But this is truck is a restomod and I just left it the natural aluminum color. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the update, was very curious how it was holding up? Adding vintage air to my truck now and needed to step up the cooling system, this helps me make my radiator decision a bit easier. thanks again!

Re: Looking For A Radiator

I had to cowboy up and order one for my big block super. Seems to be a good bargain since I cannot have mine rebuilt for this much.

Re: Looking For A Radiator

I originally had a 2 row. I used a set of brackets from a vendor on here and put in a 4 row from O'Riellys. It cost right at $200 5-6 years ago. Direct fit and it looked high until I pushed the rad down into the rubber mounts good.
It's probably overkill for a 250 but I would rather have more than I need rather than less, just wish I could make money work that way.
